I am using a compressor on master effect (current song), it sounds good, but changes the sound a lot.
Do you use comp on master? |

R u using a single or a multiband compressor?
For mastering multiband is the best choice. The single compressor can mess with the dynamic of you song.

Well, they all mess with the dynamics of the song...
Its just a matter of messing it the right way
But yeah, agree, multiband is better for master

Mixing a track with a bit of light compression on the master bus can sometimes sound pretty good - a lot of pop mixes are done that way - but you need to compare the mix with and without the compressor often to make sure you're not squashing it too much. For this purpose, a single-band compressor is what you want, as presumably you're doing it to get the kick 'pumping' the mix.
For mastering, a combination of single and multi-band compression can often give great results, but IMO this is not something that you should do while mixing down. |

Really agree with that, no problems in putting on master, but write the track without them
I used to write the track with stuff on master, now im just doing that in the end, (or in soundforge) when i'm happy with mix, and things are working much better

...unless you want your tunes to sound good when you play them out yourself - before they get released - in which case you need to do some home-brew mastering to get them sounding half-decent in comparison with, say, Sub 6. Of course, you'll send the label the unmastered version (and your mastered version, just in case! ) so that Kevin Metcalfe or whoever can do a job on it.

what a useless post. mastering is as much a part of the creation process as eqing and leveling. and adding a touch of comp to your master channel is hardly mastering. its just a way to liven your mix. i would never do it for my final mix down or during the creation process, but for listening purposes, it works just fine

Te_nTe... spend some more time making music, talk to some producers who know what they're doing (oh, sorry, I forgot you're already doing that here but not listening to them)... and you'll learn it for yourself. |

Colin i think u take posts to much close to heart , and use of such language prooves nonsense in your cynic statement ! |
|
It seems to me that a lot of Te_nTe's posts have no purpose other than to disagree with advice given. Please excuse me if I get annoyed with this.

| BTW u talk here not less than him so maybe u need to make music too. |

Agreed, I DO need to spend more time making music - there are people waiting for me to finish a couple of tracks - but EVERY SINGLE ONE of my posts (except one!) on this Music Making forum is aimed at offering help and assistance, so again, please excuse me if I find it annoying when people disagree with good advice just to make themselves feel big.

maybe u feel aggression in his words but it's subjective. |

Then he either has a different definition of what 'alive' means, or doesn't know how to use compression. And I don't think I'm the only one who has been getting a little annoyed. I don't feel aggression from him/her, just insecurity and the need to see his/her name on the screen.
But maybe it's a language thing - I know English isn't the first language of many people who post on here, and it is possible that I could be mistaking a genuine attempt to enter into discussion for sullen, contrary behaviour.
Maybe the forum would be better off if I didn't post here?
