I like to make remixes of other psytrance tracks but is it legal to make remixes and release them without asking the artists from whose is the original track? |

I don't believe this is legal, but most of all: its disrespectfull imho to not ask an artist to do a remix. Also isn't it more easy to do a remix when you have the original project files?
Isn't this just a matter of common sense? :S |

well how i understand artists have a copyright protection or no? A copyright protection is very expensive and i don´t think many artists pay this. And how i know if an artists hasn´t a copyright protection you can copy all what you want and put it in your cd or no? |

Personally, I'd be pretty pissed if someone released a remix of one of my tunes and didn't even bother to ask me. Also you need to realize that if a track has been released on a label, you're not just screwing the artist, you're screwing with the label that is paying for that track, and they tend to have the ability to respond to those type of actions well.
If for some reason you released onto a label and you put those illegal remixes on the cd, then the label that is putting out your cd is also open for a suit for copyright infringement or intellectual property. It's always better to ask the artist well beforehand and respect their wishes if they say no.

I would never ask Simon for example if i make a remix of lsd or darg magus (to have better changes to get a girl that i like for example or anything else) because i havn´t the phone number or e-mail or skype number of him, lol. Today i only make music for fun. But i hope i will produce comercial music to sell and if i will produce music i will ask the artist of course from who i want to make a remix. |

Think there is a moral obligation to ask the artist, even if there is in some cases no legal obligation. IMO. |

Slight question... Why even bothering with remixes anyway? Believe it or not, I make music for fun. If a label happens to like it and release it, that's a bonus. I have experimented with a remix here and there (there was a NIN remix competition a while back that I started but never finished.) But I find more enjoyment creating from scratch, whether it sounds as good as such and such producer or not... But put the shoe on the other foot for a moment. You have this tune that you wrote and some person decides to remix it without the simple respect of investing the time to at least email the original artist and ask or even let him know that "hey, I loved this track so much that I did my own remix to it, here you go... I'd love some feedback."
You'll find it's honestly not that hard to at least track down a way to contact the individual. Whether or not the person responds is another story.
I honestly feel the same way about remixes of other genres' tracks too...

to be more spacific, anything that is "created" is copyright protected. even if it hasnt been released, it is protected under law. under US rule, it is illegal to use copyrighted material without expressed written permission.
in the USA, you do not have to register your material to be copyright protected. if you created it, it is auto-protected. you do, however, have the option of registering your material with the goverment. its pretty cheap actually. only $30. labels should really do this more, it will give you more legal leverage towared mp3 traders.
anyway... legally, moraly, common sense would suggest that you should use anything that isnt yours without having permsion. just ask first. you'd be surprised how "good vibe" people can be.

Normally what you have to do to secure your copyright is to send a recording by registered mail to yourself.
You then have legal proof that you own the copyright, and AFAIK there simply is no other way and no fees involved, at least in Europe. Copyright is automatic on creative works, so it's just a matter of prooving that you created it.
You have to read the license terms of the work you like to remix, and it will in 99.9% of the cases clearly tell you that it's not allowed to make a remix without permission.
When there is exceptions it would not be allowed to use the remixes commercially.
If you want to earn money on music you'll have to do the work yourself or in cooperation with the originator of the music you like to use.
With the material me and Mubali have on resonantearth.com it's allowed to make remixes for non commercial use according to the license terms.
I try to make the terms clear to artists I publish on the site and I hope Mubali don't get angry if someone make a remix of 40 acres and a mule as long as you don't release it commercially

I hope to that you will earn a fortune making commercial sound out of other ppl's products... (NOT!)
When making a remix of a track, u should be aware that the original "writer" of the music, is entitled to up to 90% of the earnings!!!!
If your into this for money-making, i would suggest that you make something new, instead of sucking the life elixir out of those who struggles! |

the copywright is not expensive man.
U send an envelope with the track to ur self .....just u need to pay 5 euro for the envelope ..i don't know how is called in English..it's not a plain letter is a letter that have to be delivered to u personally...I do like this for my stuff..U never know..Just ask the clark at the post office i want to send this to me for copywright purpuse
Using Simon's name to make money.....is not fair at all...And be sure that u will get a very nice penalty if u don't ask him permission.....MAKE YOUR OWN NAME or Make it for fun not for release.....Even for fun ..the creator will be happy to hear(i think) if u send it 2 him...and maybe he likes it..etc...TRY

You will probalby never get a label to relase a remix you do not have permission to do... they would be in a shitload of trouble and would probably have to pay major $$ to the label owning the rights to the track.
Releasing it on the internet yourself, could also make you end up in a bad situation, since they do have the power to make you pay
Also, you will find it a lot easier making a remix, if you have access to some of the files (like charactarizing leads and stuff)...
So my suggestion is: Do the remixes you like, and keep them to yourself. Give them to friends; use them at dj sets, but down upload them to the internet at public sites...
