hey, i saw people talk about stuff like white noise and other types (colors?) of noises.
can someone tell me what does each of them mean and why do they have "special" names.

analogous to the light the sound has a spectrum.
so white noise is a "uniformly distributed window" in frequency domain i.e. all the frequencies are present in equal probaility.

pink noise is not a window, but a triangle - the higher the frequency - the smaller the probability.

u can read here: http://www.msaxon.com/colors.htm

ok stuff i didn't understand:
window
power density
octave (i know what it is but not in this context)
and some other stuff

would anyone be more simple?
and where can i hear those kind of noises, if its possible to hear them.          REHAB is for quitters

window ... is a graph like this one:
http://www.cis.rit.edu/resources/software/sig_manual/images/graphs/rect.gif

it is like a rectangle, or window.

"power density" is the graph of power of signal
(square signal in time) in the frequency domain. i think u should read some if u really want to know what this is. though, it describes the signlal in a special way ...
i am ill now, so i have no patience..

octave is 12 semitones. and a semitone is a difference between mi & fa or si & do.
this can be translated into Herz.

but why is it white or pink, and not pale-dark-green'ish-blue or a-bit-red'ish-yellow-purple?

i see i can get my DSP lessons here at isratrance

Anakoluth : the noises are named by one color because they have the most energy at frequecies which are identified by that color, which means red color for high frequencies blue for low frequencies and thier variations in between.

flip...it was more like a joke ;-) but what i am interested in... are those the same sound colors as everywhere? are those colors in general association to sound or...?           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

well the color thing came from physics, as you know light has frequencies like a sound signle does.

the switch from light to noise was made because due to the properties of each kind of noise.

each kind of noise got his color name due to the fact that it's frequencies get their highest intensity in that region.

WN = equal energy for all freaks
PN = equal energy per octave
PsyNoise = full on energy per person
