I just purchased the $40 license of reaper. I figured why not. Its an awesome daw rather I use it or not and the devs deserve the money. It seems to be by far the most powerful daw out there especially when I found out it supports python and perl scripting. I'm a python web developer so I know a share of python.
First off I was waiting on Medea to get online. I can't wait any longer! So I was wondering if any of you were able to share or could point me to where I can download a pre-made list of hot keys created using the actions list in reaper. Also, what types of scripts are available for reaper that make production easier? I can't think in my mind a script that would do something I'd need unless its just there to make silly things like crossfades and multi knob automation easier. Also if I'm understanding I can write my own reaper plugins in Python? When reading about developing reaper plugins they often refer to js audio. That sounds like javascript to a web developer like me. Then I read about python integration and that you can make plugins with python. So any information on anything I've asked would greatly help. However what I really really want is a pre-made set of hotkeys that I can use without having to spend hours and hours going through the actionlist to find the useful features.
Thanks a lot, go REAPER!

First, welcome in the Reaper community!
Reaper is a great tool but his flexibility make the learning curve hard at a first glance.
The most obvious but even the most useful suggestion is to lurk moar in the forum: http://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20
Before to play remember to check accurately the preferences, start using track templates, messing around with his legendary routing, create custom actions, discover the bundled plugins (so much ugly as much effective).
For a complete shortcut list have a look here: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=15582 BUT is hard to find a resume cause it was projected to be customized to suite your workflow. The same that applies for shortcut applies also to menus, icons and toolbar: is rare to find 2 reaper installation from different owners looking and acting the same.
For exemple i have an icon on my toolbar with an "action set" that render the midi item to audio (with fxs), reverse it and create a new track for it: i think i am the only one to have it, you will not find it anywhere.
Changing topic: JS means Jesusonic and not JavaScript.
For a complete overview: http://reaper.fm/sdk/js/js.php
Again, there is a dedicated subforum for JS development: http://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3
Hope to be helpful, have a great time with Reaper! |

thanks for the help mates. i realize everyones workflow is different but is there a way someone can share their main menu and keymap with me? i imagine i wont need to change a whole lot since everyone here is doing the same types of music. reaper at first glance isnt powerful at all but once you realize you can custom all your menus and actually look at the actionlist then you realize it is MOST powerful.
Also what is the action called that renders midi to audio? http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

Now i can't check (ipod posting) but should be something like "item: apply fx to a new take"
and you can export/import menus via reamenu files or config via .ini file
lemme know if it works, i am glad to help a reaperite |

I just installed REAmenus that helps a lot in organizing the features into groups that make sense instead of just having a HUGE list lol.
Question:
How do you reaper users do your drums? Do you just place the wave files on the track lanes and then group them by sets of bar or 4bars etc? Or do you bother with an external drum machine like battery? With reapers set of options I see no need for a sampler. However, correct me if its much easier for YOU to work with a drum sampler to do your drum work.

I am used to load my drum sample in ReaSamplomatic (the bundled Reaper sampler).
To preview the sample i keep the Media Explorer open and when i like it i drag it to ReaSamplomatic (set to Mode_Sample(ignores MIDI note).
That's all.
If you want a shortcut you can load ReaDrum that is a track template featuring some ReaSamplers already set.
