Just some thoughts on 16th note hats.
So I've found I inevitably turn off closed 16th rhythym hats really fast as they get annoying.
A lot of music really does have that driving 16th note hat line well embedded in the mix to where it doesn't sound annoying.
I think I end up switching samples first, and most often, on closed hats more than anything else I choose. Which of course derails the rest of my project after I try to change it.
Just thought I'd put this out there and see if anyone had any advice, or if I'm alone in this area lol |

i find that the drum section in psy is actually very flexable, as long as it has groove really. and alot of different samples can sound good which i think makes it even harder! haha
closed 16th hats can get annoying fast if they are to high or loud and/or not EQed. but more often than not i find im making most of my hi hats from scratch
I think its mostly personal preference and how you want your music to sound you know??

try to quantize and c if u like how it sounds
also highpass your percussion and play with the filter cutoff it can make it sound a lot different dan what it would originally sound like! |

Change the velocity of the individual hits as well that can change the groove ALOT!
Then again: if you don't like it just don't use it soundcloud.com/supergroover |

Velocity is essential in my opinion, and also quantization.
If you are out of good ideas, try also to study how engineers have made some hi-hat loop you really like.
I never used sidechain compression on 16th hi-hat lines...
I just lower the velocity of conflicting hi-hats or leave the space empty.
Am I missing something?

no ones 'missing anything' if you're happy with how it sounds
I too found that when I was trying to emulate the fast 16th hat patterns that mine would turn out very stale and *definitely* annoying.
Adding a tiny bit of swing quantization, velocity changes and getting it to sit right in the mix is key to me.
Also - other drum patterns! if the 16th pattern is playing just by itself for too long the brain starts to focus on it more and for me personally it really starts to frustrate me - but if my brain has other things to focus on that are changing then the closed 16th pattern becomes less present but still adds its energy to the track

No, you are not, this is just two ways of doing the same thing. That is assuming you have velocity mapped to volume or something. The point is just to lower the volume of the closed hh when the other stuff hits. SC comp, vel, or note delete all get the job done
on topic: having some interspersed 32nd note trills usually does the trick for me. you could also try adding some shuffle, which works in a small number of cases, but is quite cool if it does. I heard this deliriant track a while back where the song was in straight groove, but the hats were shuffling, it was bad ass. when i try it it sounds kinda lame tho... i think i just need more work on it

If you get annoyed by a sound probably is because the sound, hi hat line in this case is not polished enough.
Straight 16th hihat lines using the same sample with same velocity level can be annoying. But a well balanced and groovy hihat line can be very inspiring and provoque dance by itself.
I can listen to a nice loop for a long time without getting annoyed.
Rapid Hihats are the spine of my percussion. |

16th hi hats are an awesome weapon to use when you want to create some instant drive in your track. If the sound of them annoys you, maybe try more processing- EQ, compress, distort, saturate, filter, etc.
I'll occasionally use panning on my 16th hats too.

oh yeah, stereo spread on hats can make really nice. use filter delay or something, delay one side like 1ms, the other like 10ms, drywet to taste, real nice widening.

Lololol, Sidechaining and changing the notes velocity will make it stop being so annoying and repetitive, that's sort of obvious isnt it good sirs?
