What has happened finally with Christianias "planned" shut-down? The last thing I saw was in the biggest swedish newspaper DN about a relative big demonstration against this unfair decision from the danish goverment...

Somebody well-informed that can spread his/her knowledge?

Last thing I heard from my brother (who lives in Copenhagen) is that there are plans of a police raid. The Danish Government wants to close it down and build expensive appartments there. That's about all I know.

It would really be a loss to Danish society if they would close it down... Maybe you can help them out if you sign their petition at http://www.christiania.org/~befri/gl.php3 but I'm afraid that it will take more than petitions to get the Danish Government to reconsider

Still alive, but the police have raids on regular basis.

The governments objective is to shut it down though - and it will happen sometime soon if nothing is done to prevent it. Sad but true.           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I've heard that if they shut down it, it will begin to popup coffeeshops instead.           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

Why not? I thought you guys had come pretty far in the legalisation? Well I'm not sure... but for sure it's more actual than in Sweden.           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

Christiania is so much more than a "junkie town. True - there's a part of Christiania called "pusher-street", but all that the police confiscate there is hash.

The hardest drugs like heroine and cocaine is found in other parts of Copenhagen.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

Traveller. I must say that unfortunatly I understand that you call Christiania for a junkie town. But think about it a little while. Instead of having people active in the streets doing traffic where maybe something can go wrong, you can go to a specific place and buy the stuff there. It´s more controlled. Why not have it? It shows moreover that Copenhagen is a city that represents some part of society that otherwise is hidden and dismissed by most of the worlds goverments. The illegalization and criminalization of marijuana is just a dominoeffect from the U.S. decision where it was banned in the late 60´s I think. Instead of judging Christiania as "junkie town", accept it and have a more liberal statement of things you don´t know.

Don't worry guys they will not close Christiania.
"Junkie city" I thing less then 2% of the people at Christiania are Junkies. And the idea of legalization of cannabis in Denmark does not have enough political support currently. But there are literally 100'ts of illegal smoking cafes… So if they ever close Christiania, it won’t be a serious problem. The main reason I thing they shouldn’t do it is also the tourism; it’s a huge tourist attraction, third largest in Copenhagen. Shutting it down would lessen the charm of Copenhagen, which will inevitably result in loss of tourist money. And nobody wants that .
