Hey guys

I wonder what some of you use to create that chopping effect that is a trademark amongst alot of psytrance music. I've tried some midi gating in fruity loops, but I can't get the effect that I want to. I've also tried the chopper VST that comes with Cubase, but this also didn't quite do it. Sometimes I slice up wav files in the fruityloops slicer, but this can feel rather restricted at times because it doesn't slice the sounds correct, I get alot of pop and clip sounds
Does anyone of you have some tips on this, or a VST recomandation of any kind?

If you need gating effect (and many others), use the amazing plug-in dBlue Glitch

Other tools I like a lot:
Recycle (for slicing the transients sounds) and Zero-X BreatCreator (for making breakbeats)

try a gate on the synth itself, ie albino/vanguard etc... they have nice gates...

also try a tremellow...it gives the effect without actually chopping anything...

good luck

You can also do it manually, bouncing the file, chopping the audio into slices in cubase and then mutting some parts, if you use the scissors and hit the control at the same time you cut your audio file in slices of equal size of the one you just cut, and then with a tiny attack and decay in each part the clips are gone.

This is how i always do it

MATRIX @ Reason is the best "Chopper" ever, but it only works inside Reason. So many possibilities and is also a "pattern" machine. That means you can store complete banks of different gates that also control FX at the same time, and toy with those presets live...

I work in Logic nowadays, but still dream with Matrix.

Apart from that, many synths have teir own "gate".
Like Vanguards "trancegate", Nordlead's gate and Albino Modulation Matrix (where you use the Arpeggiator as a gate, inserting those velocity values provided by Phobium)

You can also try the MIDI-gate in cubase, which is a little bit awkward, but does the job most of the times. Try it with midi-information from REX-files, this can sound really groovy

U could go one step further and send an audio or midi channel to an fx channel with invert phase and midi gate effects, so that u could subtractively remove the sounds u dont want.(I mean fine tune the effect)
It does work I tried it once.
this way u can automate the amount of effect with the volume slider on the fx channel.
