Good/Important question , Well .. I belive that mello's/Atmospheric pads are somthing deferent , When 70% in our track is technic (Bass , Kik , Hh Loops , Leads and those) - Mind games , Atmos and mello's are more go's with the heart , Feeling , So this may be some time difficult when you think you can but you dont have the mood .

I like use 3 Vsts in an 1 pad (Only for the atmos/Mello , For an more grand warm sound in - Also to creat those illusion of harmony and space at the same time in) Can add later more element on/In . For example lets take 3 familiar well-known Vsts , Lets say we open 'Korg LegacyCell' On sound - 'Influx Strings' + 'Korg M1 Le' On sound - 'Breathy' + 'Albino' On sound - 'Dark Cloud' , Take the pencil and write your music (Can be on 1 of them) . Ctrl D , Put them all 1x1 (You can even change here and there - Lets say with the 'M1 Le' This sound can be use for the highers , You will find there kind of flute sound , And with the others you can go more down (Deferent note on the same write) it will bring you this space we are talking of .

Now each one of those sounds via compressor .

Cheers and good luck ..

i think a simple saw wave is a good point to start. you can try detuning the saws, letting different oscillators play in different octaves, playing with stereo spread, try PWM or even a bit of FM to make it "glitter". there are lots and lots of possibilities.

other important things to consider are long multi-stage enverlopes and/or lfo's on diff. parameters to make the sound "evolve", playing chords instead of notes also often gives a much fuller, more interesting sound. and of course reverb: i find that finding a nice warm reverb can make or break a pad.

as for plugins i have had much luck making good pads with zebra2, medium success with vanguard and i couldn't make a good pad with any of the rob papen synths if my life depended on it (don't ask me why...).

takes many layerng manytimes over to make a nice lush pad that has plenty going on. often when i need to make a complex atmosphere i just look to some plugin presets.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

it's always good to start with unisono, detune as you like, spread the voices over the stereo field.
waveform of your choice, saw is nice.
LP/BP/HP with 12dB slope to leave more frequencies through. or not, if you want ;-)
some resonance.
now modulate/automate all you can with all you find, but subtly.
reverb, chorus, flanger, ...
and don't forget to play melodies, chords with your pad-sound to keep it interesting..

if one cannot make a convincing pad with one synth alone he should not yet dare to use 3 synths at once.
(sorry to be of no help here)

if i still wanna go with 3 different synths, do i eq them apart?
If i dont have such good FM options in my synth, is there any plugin i can get for this?

with programs like discovery infact you have i believe 24 oscilattors to work with with 36 lfos because it has i believe 12 different layers you can use for one patch. indeed if you cant make something cool with that dont even try bringing in a second synth.

as for your question i'd put them all on the same fx channel as opposed to putting them on different ones with same fx. unless you want to hp one and lp the other which can usually be donein the synth....          http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

what exactly do you mean by discovery ? The synth discovery pro? Can you be a little more specific with the name?

Thanks!
