First rule: there are no rules

Use whatever you like, for drums you could use Battery for example, furthermore they're are many VST instruments you can choose from, search a bit on the forum and you will find what people use here. Try some demos out, start jamming.

emmm, more details about your experience will be helpful... generally speaking, i believe Logic is the software you need to put in the center of your Mac.

You may want to consider a sampler and sample banks. For example the sound of a good piano can be really chill, same with some laid back strings from guitars, violins, orchestras, etc!

Reason provides a nice selection of these sampled instruments, it is worth a consideration.

before anything why a powermac G4????

its getting harder and harder to run any macs application on a g4 especially new ones, so i would reconsider this computer...but thats just my thought you can still make great music with it, but if you wanna think a bit ahead i woudlnt suggest buying such a machine.

You could check this link:

The bottom post is usefull i think, its a great idea to do you're own sampling, i want to do this aswell one day..

1500 Euros for a g4, its a lot! I got my PC (MSI Neo2 Platinum with Athlon 64 3200+ and 1gb of ram) for less then 1000 euros and it runs great.

As for the music making, i adviced you to try out different instruments, try and get familiar with the terms being used, read this forum or the KVR-forum.

Try some tutorials out, listen to other peoples music and just experiment!

I noticed that it takes a lot of time to start from scratch, but as long as you really want to learn you will get there, so choose a host and figure out how to work with it
