12 inch review:
Artist: Chi A.D.
Title: Liquid Neon Sky / Book of Eden
Label: Ektoplazm
This is the first release from a brand new Canadian label, and you can tell that they’re quite passionate about what they do. I haven’t seen cover art like this for a 12-inch release in a long time. (Well, except for Spirit Zone releases.) I was surprised to discover that the design was actually a photograph, instead of a digital creation. Beyond that, this 12 marks the much-anticipated return of Chi A.D. Two brand new tracks are presented here, and both make a wonderful return to the old school goa sound. “Liquid Neon Sky” comes up to bat first, swinging away with thickly layered melodies. They work well, swirling away over the different bouncing bass lines. The 303 squelches and psycho sounds work in upon occasion, but overall the tune is primarily driven by the wide arrangement of progressive synth work. On the flip we find “Book of Eden” waiting for us, as if it had been hidden there since 1997. This thick track begins on a much more aggressive note, and storms it’s way through layer after layer of melody. Much more distortion can be found in the synth work. At times, however, it sometimes seems like the track isn’t really going anywhere. Also, the mastering seems a bit over compressed, causing drops in the track. On the whole, though, a notable debut effort, and a welcome return to those memorable days gone by.
