Hmmm...
Imo commercial and mainstream kind of go hand in hand whereas a lot of non mainstream/commercial stuff can be cheesy and vice versa.
Mainstream just means the artist is known and liked by a broad audience and therefore the music becomes "commercial" as it is more readily available and can therefore be sold more often.
Many things can be cheesy and the evaluation of cheese is in the eye of the beholder For me cheese is something that is overused, not suprising and lame in a kind of inexplicable way.
I find the most commercial/mainstream stuff are/were compilation releases like GoaHead, Pulse etc which could be bought in nearly every department store music section.
Mainstream artists include GMS, Astrix, Electric Universe, Eskimo, Yahel and many others. (Also Infected Mushroom and the beloved Skazi during peak time, before leaving the scene once and for all).
Sphongle/Raja Ram stuff is also very mainstream.
Mainstream = the stuff my girlfriend likes
Cheesy...hm..lots of stuff...all those "The first time I took lsd intros with "spacey" pads lol...
I find lots of Astral Projection cheesy, the 100000th GMS movie track....
and Shamanic Tribes on Acid..no idea why but my toe nails curl upwards @that.
And Wrecked Machines....help my toe nails are curling oO

@kazuku... You are right with most of what you have said. But if i find it extremely hard to believe that you put Electric Universe in the same category as GMS , Yahel and Infected Mushroom |

when i think of cheesy for me.........i think of some of the more melodic full on music......
the commercial mainstream music for me is some of the clubby full on or housy prog style music.
I wouldnt consider shpongle "Act" mainstream.....maybe his popularity has become mainstream. If you take away his popularity and you just listen to his music, then i wouldnt consider it commercial sounding. A fantastic music producer imo.

interesting topic psytones
imo comercial music is very easily accessed.
i mean the music doesnt go deep.
easy uplifting, easy fullon.
well i hate to say it but skazi is an excellent expample for commercial music.
you will like it even when you are a newcomer.
cheers

hehe Raja you are right...not really same category as GMS etc. but still somewhat mainstream imo.....maybe its just that I hear "Meteor" everywhere...
ok lets leave EU out of it...at least Boris Blenn makes psychedelic music unlike some others I mentioned.....
Oh yeah and that club psy like BUS and stuff makes me sick |

Electric Universe is part of the mainstream category along with GMS and Yahel?
You guys are a little bit confussed i guess.
By the way i dont know how mainstream can a group like GMS or an artist like Eskimo be from the moment that they dont sell more than 10.000 album worldwide.

As I explained in my previous post, "mainstream/commercial" doesnt have to mean it is cheesy or bad. It just means they had a clever record company with a good distribution network, allowing their styles to become heard and liked at the right point in time.
An example of this was Spirit Zone who had a very wide range of artists ranging from EU and Sun Project to GMS, Ethnica and Space Tribe, every one who was around at the time would have listended to the Spirit Zone compilations at some stage..because everyone and their neighbour and their dog had one.
Thus the artists got a lot of exposure which was reflected positively in their popularity, reputation and album sales in many cases.
Was Spirit Zone mainstream? Imo yes
Do mainstream artists have to sound the same? Imo no.
Can mainstream music still be wholesome and psychedelic? Of cause it can!
Is Electric Universe mainstream? Imo Yes. Just like Sphongle is also mainstream (Although I agree with someone who said the music is not truly mainstream, but thats where clever marketing comes into play again.)
Lets expand the discussion to progressive trance/progressive Psy....
Atmos - sensational music, commercial? Oh yes... 3 words ..."Klein aber Loewe" oO
Shiva Chandra - Commercial music? Most cases not at all....Mainstream? Yes...Judging by the money Mr. Daniel takes for sets...definetly...once again Spirit Zone opened the gate to success
How mainstream can Psy artists be? Well it is obviously all relative. Compared to others outside the scene...not very mainstream at all. Compared internally, the answer is as mainstream as they can go untill the boundries of the scene are stretched to a point..and then suddenly they find themselves outside the scene...like Skazilla or someone. Then the music can become open end mainstream from there on.
Sry for long post, just needed to clarify.

i agree with kazuku `s first post completely
overused techniques .. cheesy (dont matter if its killa weird dark trance or happy isra beats)
commercial / mainstream .. by defenition , anything that sells a lot (again ..dont matter if its hard dark psytrance or happy prog beats or watever)
the only non commercial trance nowdays would be the finnish suomi sound and some of the weird ozzzy psyharmonics stuff . rest all has loads of people listning .. full on (dark or happy /prog / chill ) and is therefore mainistream/commercial ..
well not if u compare it to hip hop / pop music .. but in the psy scene anyway ..
