I just realized I had been doing this for quite some time as a tool to improve my production skills and thought I'd pass it on to anyone else who finds it useful. I started making sure I could explain to myself WHY I was doing what I was doing (whether it was a part of sound synthesis, EQing, compressing, or whatever). This prevented me from getting into habits that would uselessly waste time doing something without any reason and usually not contributing to the track. I started to pay more attention to what I was doing once I started making sure I knew why I was doing it.
This has helped me to be aware of what knowledge I was lacking. I have able to focus more specifically on what I want to learn since I know it applies to my style of production.
I think it's a pretty simple step to follow that will only benefit you in the end (especially newer producers). Hopefully this helps someone. If not, well la dee da.

la dee da. Ascension this is luke back from MN! I totally agree with what you are saying, The more I produce the more i find myself asking "exactly what needs to be changed?" and then focussing in on that instead of just pulling up some synth randomly being like: yeah i am going to make this "better".
Tossing an in-progress track onto an mp3 player and listening with a pencil and paper in hand can also make a difference. this is really nice for making production notes like... oh this section needs to flow better, or, this isnt building up quickly enough, etc. I find those types of notes can be done just listening on crappy earbuds.

Ascension, you are so right. In my opinion, it is very important to question the logic in composition and arrangement too.

my drums stopped being piles of garbage once I found out how swing/groove works.
Well, they still sound like garbage. Garbage with a groove though!
