Anyway, for what it's worth, maybe you could look for a used car sub and cheap amp/reciever?
Far from great SQ, but I'm just throwing out ideas since we're talking about computer subs..
If you would be using it exclusively with the Samson's, you could just build a passive LPF for it for around $10.

Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

im with Naga and Zoopy..
And i dont think i would recommend a car sub...
at least the guys in the Car radio store who sells subs and other speaker systems both for car and home didnt recommend me to get a car sub to have at home... but i dont know it might work but those cheap ones dont have a good freq crossovers, thats how i understood them...
that tannoy looks nice and Zoopy vouch for the samson....
i work with a subsystem, its both advantage and disadvantage... im lookin forward to some nice monitors... either Adams or if i can find some old tannoy reveal.. i really like them...
I live in a concrete appartment and when i make a kickdrum with my voice real hard i can hear the concrete echo... i will soon get some foam to put in the ceiling and maybe also get some basstraps for the corners...
Good luck and get a sub it not bad to have one...

I currently have ADAM 2A's. Im struggling with the bass in my current setup. The mixes just keep coming up heavy bass. And now Im at the point where for me to continue to drop the bass during mixdown, Im reaching the point where its off the radar screen. I know the room has a lot to do with it and I must be mixing in a bass reduction node.

This happens to be pretty common problem - i think it's much more a feature. I've read/heard nobody admitting that near field monitors itself can produce enough bass for electronic music production. Maybe it's because lower frequencies need more power to come up at same level as high frequencies, or about acoustic or sum of many things.
If I listen Pink noise which should represent equal loudness in every frequency I cannot hear the bass enough even I have boost the Subwoofer to it's limits. I have tried to play Pink noise back to Cubase and analysing monitor's sound with spectrum - cos poor room acoustic I've replace mic closer and new position that Output and Mic talkback would be exatcly same (pink noise oues and mic catch pink noise correctly). After this i've listened commercial tracks from that position my monitors produced the most flat responce with pink noise.. Results were: tracks were more balanced with spectrum but I had less bass.
what happens with monitors it doesn't matter if frequency response is 20Hz-20kHz (+-3db) it's same kind of illusion like "Watts represent how much air pressure it's possible to get from speakers. If monitors have full and flat response it doesn't mean that there is enough bass for sub bass mixs. Heavy bass needs heavy response
there are differences between styles and listeners:
"genelecs 8050 have good pretty good bass response but different highs with adam 2.5A and less definated in subs besides dynaudio BM6. genelec has also unliked highmid."
all this i'm talking about doesn't really matter in many cases because if reference tracks sound good and they i've everythings fine, if sounds is lacking bass it will be added by a sub and modify the room acoustics. generally everything is about "whatever sounds good".
use two different sound systems:
1. logitech 2.1 for composing, editing and making it pump and punchy. now it's possible to concentrate the most important area - making a song.
2. use reference monitors for making it more clarity, "killing more dynamics" and adding puch, fine tuning reverb and everything
3.back to logitech.
i sure, it is inpossible to mix tight subs like new tracks from ultravoice or u recken with out midfield system or with sub
Why 2.1 logitech gives more bass and way "pleasurable" sound than genelec 8050? is it about coloring? how it's possible make music sound good in logitech if it sounds shit through 8050? "" |

Car subs are generally passive..you would have to make a fixed 12db/oct LPF that rolls off at the Samson's F3. It would only consist of two components that you can get really cheap, and you can do it with just a piece of cardboard, extra speaker wire, and a hot glue gun or epoxy.
I'm not saying it's a great thing to do, but it's definitely the cheapest option I can think of, unless you happen to run into some REALLY great deals.
