Does anyone know what's happening with the rhythm in Shpongle - Divine Moments of Truth at at 2:31 into the song?
I mean, I can hear that it's a change of the rhythm but what I don't know is what's happening, in musical/technical terms, as from and into what kind of beat does the song change?
For those who don't know the song or haven't heard it for a while

It sounds like it is shifting a beat or something. The tempo stays the same, but there is half a beat shift.

It's a polyrhythm and all they do is change which beat are most prominent.
If you tap one hand in 3/4 and one in 4/4... or should I say:
count 3/4 in 1/16's
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 1...
now you tap some 1/16ths into it with your other hand, both hands tapping on the one and I'll mark out the other 1/16ths with brackets ( )
(1) e + (a) 2 e (+) a 3 (e) + a 1
So one hand taps 3 time per bar and the other taps 4 times and both hands start the bar at the same time.
If you tap harder with the hand counting the original beats you are in 3/4.
But if the hand tapping the 16ths is more prominent than the other you will be in 4/4.
All they do in this track is make the syncopation more prominenet. Shpongle do it all the time.
Though on this track they start in 4/4 then overlay the 3/4 over the top later.

the beat goes 4/4 8th triplets and then changes into 12/16th that gives you the feeling of a very slow 3/4 going on, but the 16ths are accented.
The thing is that this is a great example of how a melody of the same speed fits into 2 different rythms. Which is what soulfood mentioned above. It's all about the accents - and it changes the whole thing!Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

This misses the point. Polyrhythm is 2 time sigs at the same time..there isn't much polyrhythm in shpongle at all..
Its just a time sig change...Most music though doesn't bother with time sig changes...I would argue its why shpongle 1 kicks so much ass..just not use to hearing time sig changes, especially at that time in electronic music.. Its transparent though, dream theater make their time sig changes too obvious...
old Police is a better example of how to use changing time sigs actually musically IMO..

well, thats why dreamtheater is progressive metal...
what i hear in your example... there is a timechange yes... they double it from time to time and go back then.
but there is no "strange feeling" what is the desired goal of the threadstarter.
(or maybe i missed the part in your example?)

True... sorry I thought there was an overlap in the middle but there's just a few beats that mark the end of the first sig and it crashes straight into 3/4

I'll tell you why I figured it was a poly rrhythm...
It's because it's not JUST a time sig change. If it was just a time sig change the pulse would remain the same, only the bar would have a different duration in beats. What we have here is a tempo change as well in order to change to the 3/4 time, only the tempo remains the same and the pulse is divided up differently.
So it's more like 12/8 to 3/4 and a drop of 33.3% tempo right?
Would you call that some kind of compound time signature?
