What do you think caused it? I think it's two main things

1) The workflow is different. On hardware there is more of a tendency to just jam and improvise, but on software there is a tendency to plan your track from the very beginning.

2) Software allows you to fine tune your mixing and mastering much more cheaply. Lots of artists running on a budget couldn't afford to seperately EQ each instrument back when you needed hardware to do so, so the mixing wasn't quite as tight.

What do you guys think?

I think its an excellent topic! And I think your assumptions are pretty true. I'd say the same thing.

Also I think the artists that got into producing psytrance were already pretty familiar with piano keyboards and/or other musical instruments to begin with, whereas artists now generally may be more familiar with computer keyboards and software etc.

not sure it s in the right section ,it s a personal thing but i would say many choose workflow over best sonic thats why we are many to use mostly softwares. worflow is king , even in pro audio with the success of some ssl desk for example.( can be very clean almost like in a daw but with great workflow) seems like workflow is what really matter for many.
for sonics there is no comparaison for me, i like more hardware sounds by far, but it s all about taste...i don t like much the psytrance sound of today and i think it come from the tools used , but to replace what we use in soft with hardware it would cost a fortune...but i m sure in the future we will see more and more producers going back to hardware rigs, for example just like in techno some producers use the same tools used in 95 to get what they like about that sound .
