do any of you feel that in some ways certain skills you used to have (in relation to music making) were a bit lost as you progressed?

sometimes i hear my old tunes and feel there are many cool things i used to emphasis that today don't sound as nearly as good in my latest works...

of course the old tracks coherently sound bad compared to recent stuff....

i guess its somewhat to do with beginner's luck and curiosity ad bieng naive... once you think you know some shit, you lose some of that childlike wonder in your eyes, and comform much more to your newfound "ideals" of production.

donno where i am going with this really, just pointing it out, is there a way to fight this?

I think its cause you and your view on music change with time & experience

while developing your stuff you focused on other things and more or less forgot some that you did already out of intuition in the beginning...

but that doesnt mean something bad, I bet you also learned lots of new stuff thats also cool...so now go and check your early stuff and simply grab the things you like and develope them so they fit inside your new tracks

but generally I think its normal...as soon as you know the techs and rules you have them in your subconcious and then its way harder to work really free like when you dont know anything and simply do what you want and experiment           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Totally agree.

My first/older tracks have a really rough sound, but the experimentation and ideas then I would immediately dismiss today because I know a better, more musical way of achieving the effect.

I don't want to end up just-another-producer and all the things that make me unique are the things I ignore because I know how to use my sequencer properly now. I get a better sound, but sometimes the wrong way to do things gives a more unique result.

Hard to give examples.. but I'm sure you know what I mean, when you first started, the whole process of making music was experimentation and guesswork before you settle on the tried and tested methods.

I think it has alot to do with a switch in focus, for example you may be trying to focus on drums, so you try all different types of drums in different ways and you come up with alot of different methods that work. After you do that long enough you come up with a few ways that work the best. Next you move on to something else, maybe bass, and do the same.

So i think what is happening is that you find a few ways that work and stick with them, then move on to other things. Eventually you'll probably begin to cycle around to those things again and expand your "regular" ways until the cycle completes so many times that you are a very talented well rounded artist....

Though I'm not there I could see that as a possibility           ~Airyck~

You start off with intuition and often end up staggering in the details. Or at least I do So, thats why I mentioned open channels

Why not just team up with someone who's just starting out and make a track with them?

You'd both benefit cause you'd get their beginner's luck and stuff, and they'd get your experience.

I fight this by always trying to be learning something new.

If I think about why I got some of the leads/noises I did when I was learning, its because I didn't really know what I was doing, it was all new and weird and I was seeing what would happen.

Thing is to keep finding new stuff you don't 'get' and feed off that.

Possibly.

Like at the moment I'm building a flash app which loops loops(! yes that does make sense) and gives you control over the volume. And I record the output. I have no idea what is going to come out, because its new, so instantly I'm already deriving different results which sparks my brain... you get the idea.

I'm not saying ..."Go, and build ye flash apps" everyone has different areas of knowledge. I'm saying go and explore the bits you don't know, and see what pops out of your brain.

Well, as i usually use a manual just in case i'm totally frustrated, and the tips and tricks as well and don't ask questions on production if it's not a critical case, but try to reproduce what i here in someone's track for example (in case to study some tips) on my own, i don't feel like i have lost something.
This hard way doesn't help to progress in quality fast, but at the same time you are fully into your original process, so you remember everything.
Not the optimal variant for commercial producers though

But everyone who makes dance music has to dance ... otherwise yes, there's a big chance to forget something - imho of course.
