Hello people,
i need advice - recently i made a track, i tried it on differnet hifi and car systems and it sounded very clean, transparent and perfectly in tune. /tuning of all instruments used was the same/. When i played it on a gig, the bassline was punchy, but all other melodic elements were out of tune maybe more than a half the semitone down comparing to the bassline. i was wondering if it is a PA issue, maybe overloaded /limiter?/ or is it due to the dynamics of the track ?? This happens sometimes also with tracks that use for instance bells made with fm synth.
Did you encounter similar issue ??
And how to correct this ??

its more possible that the bassline is ot of tune and not all the other synths?
i never encountered something similar but sometimes when behind the pa speakers frequencies can sound different and usualy the bass (behind the speakers always the bass is more)
fm synth bells many times are out of tune!

On my monitors /events tr8, MSP5/ bass is also perfectly in tune. it also isn´t too lowpassed, so idon´t know. but it was maybe an interfering between PA and monitors on a party...
will post a sample of track in a while
thnx for reply |

Agree with Orange here...
It's not your higher lead which are out of tune, it's your bassline for sure.
Interference between PA would affect every aspect including percussion etc... and it wouldn't suddenly transpose all of your melodic leads.
Chances are that it's some sub resonances in your bassline. Use notched e.q.s carefully in the bass to reduce them (but not completely as they're still valuable to the power of your subs)
Maybe highpass abit more... it could be that the resonances are in the frequencies between the lowest frequency response of your monitors, and the lowest frequency response of the PA
Anyway, i'm almost 100% it is the bassline though...

I agree with the others on this one, it is definetly you bass that is out of tune...
The thing with bass (especially very deep bass), is that it can in some cases be hard to determine the pitch by ear..a trick is to lift the bass up one or two octaves (it sounds horrible I know ..but then play it with some of your leads, then it will be obvious if it is out of tune...if it is in tune, put it back down low, of not - adjust it and then put it back down....

It can ofcourse also be the room acoustics fucking with you.
But, I think the VB-1 is out of tune, or is it just me? Have you used that processor for the bassline? |

yeah,
first time i tried this simple vsti, run it through sonalksis eq, cut it around 1500, boosted gently around 80. i made no hipass for bass, maybe it will help, also i will try to find a freq which is causing this and notch it. i like the clarity and puch of this vsti, many artists use this /too many/ and it isn´t detuned so WTF happend ? i pitched it oct up and no problem....i think its harmonic issue.. later today i will post a sample and i will be glad to hear some opinions.
thanx everybody for answers, i appreciate it

here is the sample
http://s11.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1XMOL01DCLNFE15AD6IKNXYMSO
it`s about 4 min sample of the track with no intro, it is not finished yet, this was just for the gig, i want to add some sounds and fx to spice things up abit...sorry about the size
to Saimon : i transposed bassline an oct up once again-it is in tune /i`m very carefull about musicality and harmony/
to orange-atropa : i boosted gently about 2 db a slim notch around 80hz... |

i had this problem long time ago, evry time i saved my project and open it the bass go's down half note, so
how to fix it if that your problem:
-save your preset->remove VB->opan new VB->upload your preset->save your track
befor you save your track turn off the VB from the VST panel(F11)and then opan the track again
this is how i use to fix it, allways save your project that the VB is off (this problem hepend only with one track)

YES this is exactly what is happening in my current project. I thought I was losing my mind, I am lke WHY do all my basses sound half a note out of tune??? I thought I damaged my ears. I think theres some shortcut I keep pressing in Cubase by accident that changes the key of my VST's.
Where were you when i posted this though? hehe.

So ya, to the original poster, it could be this Cubase bug or could be related to the filter cutoff on the bass and how the change of the fundamental is perceived on a loud system. |
