I need to know what type of Cd-RW should I buy... internal vs. external, speeds, brand... etc!
Also, what type of cd media is recommended to record music, I heard that the "black media" cds are the best...

Any type of help would be welcome!

Internal vs External:

Internal are much cheeper and work easily faster than external drives. Although there is USB 2.0 fast lane burn for External drives, it is still expensive - though handy when it comes to take your burner to different places.

If you are burning only at your home, just buy the internal it's the cheapest and most reliable way.

Speeds:
The speeds today are totally ripoff. In fact a burner that says x48 for writing, will prolly reach this speed at the end of the burning process. It is also not that great to burn a CD that fast because the media might not get hot enough and data won't be burned.
I suggest burning at x16 or maximum at x24.
Also you need to get the media that can go up this speed verified.
I heard that for Audio Cdz it is best to burn at lower speeds for every CD player compatibility. I can't say it's a fact.

My Brands little top5:
Plextor
Yamaha
Ricoh
LG
Asus

About the media - the media itself contains the same data any other media will contain - the question is for how long and how well.
I have medias lying for 2 years at my place, the most cheapest Cdz - and they still last with no problem.

The expensive media is prolly TDK or Verbatim - which are great medias - they just cost a bit more and I might think they are more reliable for backing up for many years.

Hope this helps.

I mostly agree with Trip- here.
Plextor is indeed the best brand (I own one of their products). I didn't hear good things about Yamaha though.

About speed - the speed is indeed a total ripoff, because today's CD drivers are not capable of reading the whole cd at maximum speed (that's why they right 50x max and not just 50x).

Media - It is recommanded to buy media from a "known" brand. So far I've used 100's of TDK,Kodak and Samsong blank medias, all with good results.

something about Yamaha, i bought my 6/4/16 SCSI cdrw
in 1999 and i burned more than 1000 cd's with it ,
and guess what ? it still works and it works fine .
i never seen another cdrw that works for so many years.

black medias are too new , so i can't say nothing about
how long they can live, but i remember a couple of times
i bought "TDK in a box" pac of 10 and they started to
fu*k up after couple of months .
something about cheap medias, the blank ones with this
mirror side are totally shit ones, and "silver-line" are so
cheap but much better quality, they can stay for years
just like Verbatim or Kodak .

I would also recommend Teac burners for their exceptional stamina (knock on wood)
I have Teac burner from 1999 and it works just fine.
BTW if you burn Audio CD it's really recommended to burn it in max 4X speed, because the heat that is created in the process of burning increases the error rate which can do damage to the burned material. Now i don't say that it will skip in your player, it probably won't because of the error fixing codes but it will damage the stereo image.
That's why if you burn Master CD it is really adviced to burn it in 1X or 2X speeds.

As for Medias:
Yes: TDK, Verbatim, Sony
No: Silver line, LG, GP

Use the worse one only for media files and for the least important ones           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

If you have the money, there is only one option... Plextor! and unless you have a portable computer or need to use the drive on several pc's, buy a internal one, the communication with the pc is faster. Speeds buy 48x recording, it's the standard right now. But you can buy anything from 24x up, there is almost no difference (all of them record under 3 minutes, more or less a few seconds).
When recording audio, remember what Space Ninja said. Never above 4x, the ideal being 2x (i always record like this, 10 or 20 mins, what's the diff? ).

Media types... i only use Sony audio cd's (the ones w/ lots of colours) which were the ones recommended to me. Top quality, but a little expensive.

The black cd's use a material similar to vinyl. Never tried them, so i can't say anything about that.
