CD burner troubles

I bought this computer 3 months ago. It came with a CD/DVD burner. I used to be able to burn CDs and DVDs without any problems but recently i'm experiencing some troubles.

I'm using NERO to burn CDs. When i try to burn a CD it takes anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes and before it would burns CDs in less than 10 minutes. I noticed that the buffer fluctuates. It goes from 20 then it jumps to 70 and then 100 and then 30 and than 50 ....you get the idea.

Also when i try to play a DVD it playes the contents very sluggish and the sound is reallly crappy too.

Does anyone know why would this be happening all of a sudden?

Check the ide controller settings, it might be set to PIO and not ultra dma for some reason.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

I doubt it's the PIO setting, if it used to work well, but slowly degraded without you changing any settings.

Start by de-fragging your hard drive. I had a similar problem, my HD was so fragged it had to jump all over the disk to find empty spots to write the buffer data to prepare it for the CD.

It could be several other problems, but that's a good place to start.

Also, try burning @ slower speeds. What speedsa are the blank media you're using rated at? Some generic ones are crappy and should be written @ relatively lower speeds. DVD video burned on cheap media gets choppy when burned at high speeds.          http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

@Aeon
I didn't read it started degrading over time, I presume it happened suddenly one bright day. So it might be some OS fluke.

@robomarket
You can find it in the device manager, under ide controllers - properties.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

John C: No i'm not.

Aeon: I usualy buy the bulk barrels with 50 CDs. I've used RiData for a while now and i've never had ANY problems with this blank media. Now i'm using SONY 700MB and this type of media supports 48X burning.

I'll try burning a CD at a slower rate but i don't think that's going to be any different than before.
Note, when i watch DVDs, or at least when i try to, the sound is crappy and glitchy and the picture is very sluggish. So it's a buffer issue. I'll try defragmenting today.

Thanx for the help to all of you...i might need it later again

I defragmented the drive. I tried to burn a CD for a test. I changed some of the parameters. The read and write speed was set to 32x. The buffer was fluctiating all over the place once again

The Buffer Underrun Protection button is ticked.

Frankly, I never burn CDs faster than 16x. It's the fastest speed that's still "constant", anything faster than that is when the drive "spins up" to the higher speed after starting @ 16x and you supposedly lose audio quality. But that's another topic.

If it was in PIO mode, I don't think it would even allow you to try and burn @ fast speeds.

Are you burning disc-to-disc with 2 drives, or reading to the hard drive and then burning?           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

It seems that both READ and WRITE is slow, since when u play DVDs it's sluggish as you said.

This only means the whole transfer speed from the drive is hurt... Just please check if it's PIO - only 2 seconds to check it.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Good point. If he doesn't know where that setting is, I doubt he could've changed it by accident, but it's possible some CD/DVD player program changed it on install.

To clarify checking the DMA vs. PIO setting:

Right-click My Computer -> Properties
"Hardware" tab -> Device manager button
Expand the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"

Open both Primary and Secondary IDE Channel settings, and under the "Advanced" tab on each one, make sure the Transfer Mode is listed as "DMA" and not "PIO".

Make sure to check both Primary and Secondary ones, as we don't know which IDE tree your burner is plugged into.
