No, that’s not a show’s name. It’s a real mystery involving TV casting.

[rant]

So, let’s say you’re about to start shooting a TV series. Feds, big secrets, super-duper conspiracies, pseudoscience and big-time paranormal bonanza. “The X-Files” post 9/11. The main character is an FBI agent (It would be reasonable to assume she’s American).
So, now you have to do the casting.

Here are some easy choices:
- You can hire an excellent American actress (not easy)
- You can hire an OK American (or Canadian) actress who’s easy on the eyes (quite a wide choice there)
- You can hire a gorgeous American/Canadian bimbo with no acting skills at all (the audience consisting predominantly of geeky males will not mind any way)
- Failing all that, you may find some European photomodel, who starred once in a summer blockbuster and really-really-really wants to continue acting (I don’t know, maybe you have a soft spot for them Danish women, for example). You can come up with some lame excuse for why a foreigner works in a super-duper secret US Federal project – stranger things have happened.

Maybe I am missing some possibilities here, but those four scenarios should keep you busy for awhile and hopefully yield a decent hire. You’ll end up either with a reasonably good looking American/Canadian woman with, again - reasonably good - acting skills or just a gorgeous LA Barbie (acting skills not important) or a Nordic goddess with that accent you and your geeky audience find so irresistible. Sounds good.

What I don’t understand is why would you scrap all these possibilities and hire a bad actress of an average appearance, who doesn’t sound American on top of that? What would possibly force you to do that??

P.S. Yes, I just finished watching first two episodes of “Fringe”

Walter is excellent.
I just finished another 2 episodes. It seems that, although she’s technically the main character, her screen time share is not that large. And the show seems to be so good I kinda filter out the things that annoy me about her. Will give it a go.

As for the casting mystery – I solved it: she’s a Murdoch (through her grand aunt’s marriage). I’m sure it was the studio’s favor to old good Rupert.

P.S. I am surprised they didn’t have Fringe/Lost crossover episodes…

Whatcha talkin' about Willis? She does perfectly fine job.
And besides, you got Walter for those Emmie Awards highlights.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

Been watchin' “Brothers and Sisters” lately. Got totally spoiled by ever magnificent Sally Field.

Frozen yogurt is OK, but it’s hard to like it after real ice cream. Maybe later, after 5-6 servings…

Walter alone can compensate for any shortcomings this show may have – and I don’t see many of those so far.

Just moved into the second season...

Excellent show.
My rant above was a bit of an overreaction (although not entirely).
Either I’m getting used to Torv/Dunham or she’s getting better with time. In any case, just Walter alone can make up for any shortcomings this show may have – and more. Great character, totally awesome actor!

Now I am puzzled by an entirely different mystery: how come there is no 35-page long thread about “Fringe” constantly hanging on top of this forum?
It has all kinds of paranormal stuff. A crazy genius, who is a big fan of psychedelics on top of that. Parallel universes. Shape shifters. A door to the alternate world, which opens by carefully tuned sonic vibrations. A psychedelic cocktail that supercharges just the right chakras and can give you glimpses into that alternate world (and, apparently, has won Leary’s seal of approval). Everything about this show is what I see discussed on this site every day. And yet, I don’t see any discussion of the show itself. How come??
