Most of the time i use a sawtooth-waveform, amp envelope is set with attack = 0, Decay is somewhere between 10 and 60, no sustain and a short release (between 10 and 0). The filter i use is most often a low-pass filter (serial 4 or serial 6), sometimes with a bit of resonance. I use an amp envelope on the filter with only the decay parameter turned on a bit, sometimes some release. Use the ratio between this decay value and the amount of filter envelope that is applied to find the sound you need. most of the time i don't use distortion from the virus. You may want to change the curves of the envelopes by using the envelope parameters to modulate themselves (do this in the modulation section). Add some pepper, a pinch of acid et voila: le bass le plus cool |

the only thing i think the virus isnt good at is short 1/16 basslines....i am a virus owner and lover myself but i could never get the damn thing to play a decent "fast" bass . but for making chillout or hip hop basses it rocks..
it lacks speed..
the only way you could do it is record single hits of notes and place them as audio.....otherwise id go for the vb or es-m if you are a logic user. |

i dunno, but imho the virus is perfectly capable of producing tight, fast basses. It helps if you sync the oscillator by using the phase init knob. |

I agree 100%. The Nordlead is kind of fast 1/16 bass lines.
The saw wave on the virus isnt as nice and cutting as the nordleads but you can make a better sounding saw wave, I just forgot how to do it!
I have got a patch using this trick though. I might post it later.
ps: Virus rocks for pads though. |

I dont have any server space at the moment so I wont post the patch itself.
But i can tell you the osc setting for the new saw wave.
First of all turn the analog boost upto around 70 because the new wave sounds quite thin on its own. Well ok, not thinner that the normal Virus saw wave.
Osc vol: -64 (we'll be using ring mod.)
Osc1: sin
Osc2: saw, semi -3, detune 80, FM mode Tri, FM Amount 33, Sync on, ring mod (this functions only as volume knob now that the osc vol knob is -64). PhaseInit 64.
You can alter setting to improve the result.
You must play with the filter settings yourself. One thing thoug: setting filter 2 to BS, cutoff ca. 30 and mix it in slightly, without any evn mod. (filter balance ca. minus 30) makes the bass sound alot cooler (some how nothing out the right freqs make things sound cool).
Please let me know what you think!

start with patch b127, its a basic patch. i have an indigo so in my virus it is the first nob on the left above the display, i guess its like that in your virus too....the waveshape is set to saw when the nob is dead center......
hope it helps |

like any other synth - one or two osc..
saw (+triange sinus(sub) or square(kinda "hollow") is common...
lp filter - cutoff 10-70
res 0-30
env - do something alone it changes final cut freq. and can "click" the start of note - u can remove click with filter envelope
attack 0-10
decay 10-70
sustain - depend if u use long notes baaline..
a bit of realese i like
lfo - again depends how u want ur bass - if its trancy short and fast may b u better close it to 0 (or tiny filter lfo)
hmm i like to add waves rbass or maxbass to basses and tight compresor - then im usualy happy completly
