can't open recent project after format

well i'm having the most anoying thing i had since i started producing music.
i had a fully loaded project (20 intruments and some effects) before i formated which run decently on my laptop (with just some random breaks).
now after i installed everything (except some vst the project uses like atmosphere that i still haven't time to install) i can open the project but it runs slow as hell!! i have to turn off every intruments and i still can't listen to it (have to turn off effects too).

i tried reformatting, buying a pro soundcard (nice bargain at least, but i could open it with an realtek before)... still the same problem.

how can this happen? any ideas? maybe a new version of a plugin is messing this but what it looks like is too much cpu usage... or maybe a wrong driver...

edit: by the way it shows the cpu usage red light when loading plugins (when opening the project) at about 10%.

Make sure you update all your drivers, also make sure that you copied over any frozen audio parts or those tracks will probably be live again using lots of cpu.

If you made more than one partition on your hard drive make sure that your audio is on the same partition as your DAW program...

I'm not sure what else the problem could be...
anybody else have any ideas?           ~Airyck~

all drivers updated, no frozen tracks, audio is not on the same partition but oh well... it never was.

by the way i have another project (started today) it's very unstable, the cpu usage metter doesn't stop moving (even when it is stopped). the project has just 5 instruments, 4 fx and a couple of audio channels and it's already at 40%, having random peaks at 70% (more than 1 per second) and sometimes at 100%. it already has some breaks when playing!

it's like my cpu (core2duo) has just downgraded!

*** EDIT: i tried the Ableton Live 6-7 Performance Test http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=79330 to check if this was an SX problem and guess what...

i found out a guy with a similar setup to mine (core 2 duo 1.8 1gb of ram, i have the same but 2.0ghz) and he had 59% cpu usage while playing 8 tracks.

i could only play TWO tracks and still had 50% cpu usage !!!
it seems this is much more complicated than i thought...          Pyrex :: Traveling without moving

There is always the possibility that when you were working on the track originally you had temporary audio files on the same partition. The only reason I keep pushing this is because I had the same problem one time and that ended up being the issue.

hope you get it figured out...

Good Luck.           ~Airyck~

Dont use more voices than u need, dont use more effects than u need, dont use more tracks than u need.. Optimize your song.. For playing old projects u must have same plugins on the same place u had with old setup.. U can add more vsts, but everything else should be the same for best results and u wont have to search for your vst folder, sample folder and such.. Check your sample rate, bit rate, latency, overlapping notes.. Everything causes some effect..

The worst thing that can happen to u is to loose your project.. If u cant play your project u can still export midi and create track from scratch on that base..

It is much more complicated than we thought, if I knew that 10 years ago I wouldnt get into production , no way.. I remember creating track on old setup with 1.8 GHz CPU, man I had to save project every minute cause the system crashed every few minutes.. It was like playing some video game on playstation with over used laser..           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills

Have you optimised XP for background processes rather than programs?           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

thanks all for the tips

it's not a projectcubase problem since this problem also happens with the ableton live performance test project (i can only play 2 of it's tracks at the same time when my setup should be able to play 8). the project (mine) opens fine except it puts the cpu at 100% even if i turn every VSTi off (only plays after removing almost every insert)... and before i could play it with everything on.

acidkills checked everything and still nothing, i have a new project with 5 vsti (cronox and some z3tas, which is the only thing i have installed to prevent plugins problems) and 5 audio tracks and i have 70% load which was how much i had with the old project that started the conversaion (which had 20 vsti, mostly z3ta's)...

colin yes and all the tips at musicxp.net

well after 5 formats in three days trying everything i could (original drivers/new drivers, all drivers installed/just the drivers i need, with antivirus/without antivirus, with quick format/with full format...) i'm sending this to repair. thanks all

Man why do u always stuck with that background services? You said same answer when I was having a similar problem :-D

e-motion you should have 40% of normal and up to 70% max usage to leave some space for the processor.. If u use so much z3tas than its really important to reduce unnecessary polyphony and filters z3ta tend to use by default.. U didn't had to quick/full format and antivirus on/off setting.. A full format with antivirus either on or off should work..
Its bad for me to say to you but u should prepare on possibility of forgetting old projects.. To avoid this kind of problems u should save your projects in separate audio tracks, keep midi files backed up and back up presets u used in plugins as well as the samples.. I think 20 vsts is suicidal and 5 is somewhere in the middle.. z3tas are pretty heavy on cpu if u don't optimize them..
I posted a topic called vst how much and didn't get satisfied results.. It was about how much vsts guys use on their tracks.. Personally 10 vsts with fx is really enough for a good track and if u use external hardware u should need no more than 5           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills

the thing is that i could play my project with 20 vstis and if it's the same laptop why shouldn't i continue? lol the thing is that the same project with all 20 vst turned off still CAN'T be played (unless i turn off the inserts too)...

i have no problem in opening the project (the problem is the cpu usage it gives), i can even backup the midi files and the presets now but this laptop costed me 1300€ less than half-a-year ago and, of course, i won't tolerate having to work with it at 25% it's performance. so forgetting old projects or having to back-it-up to a new one with a lots of freezes and bounces is out of question.           Pyrex :: Traveling without moving
