Can I get away with using one of these to connect monitors?

Hi all,
My new monitors are going to arrive, and I'm investigating whether I can use my current sound card.
My card has a few standard outputs:The card has several 3.5mm line out jacks.
* Line Out 4 jack Connects to the Rear Left and Rear Right inputs on powered analog speakers or an A/V receiver.
* Line Out 3 jack Connects to the Front Center and Subwoofer inputs on powered analog speakers or an A/V receiver.
* Line Out 2 jack Connects to the Side Left and Side Right inputs on powered analog speakers or an A/V receiver.
* Line Out 1 jack Connects to the Front Left and Front Right inputs on powered analog speakers or an A/V receiver. Also connects to stereo headphones with a 3.50 mm (1/8-inch) plug.
A buddy that's had a little experience with AV setup suggested I try one of these

Before buying a new audio interface. The monitors are self powered
Would splitting stereo the 3.5mm jack into MONO-left/right like this work since my sound card already works perfectly find outside of connecting my monitors? |

hi man
yes this splitter will work if your monitors are self-amplified and have unbalanced rca inputs.
which pair did you buy?
edit:
as long as you changed the splitter, you can connect your monitors using the 1/4-inch jacks to the balanced inputs of your monitors but the whole thing won't be balanced, cause your soundcards outputs are unbalanced (1 cable for 2 audio channels) but do you really care about that right now? https://soundcloud.com/poisonritual |

Hi Mate, I got the Yamaha HS80M monitors. I have no idea what balanced vs unbalanced means, is it something I need to worry about? |

I finished hooking them up a few minutes ago and am breaking them in with 'Around The World in a Tea Daze.'

Get proper cables, whats the point of buying new monitors then skimpingon shitty cables for them?
Use XLR Cables.
