Well, I must say, I am a chill out junky. I pretty much listen to it alls thee time. So to me, it is excellent for the night.

But, on the other hand. When I go to a party, usually the night is best for psy to dance to and then start chillin' out once the sun comes and enjoy the dub vibes in the heavens glow.

It is night now, Biosphere is in the stereo, and I can think of nothing more perfect. Strange question, if you ask me, chillout is for chilling out, and I, for one, like chilling out at night.           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

what a funny topic.

chilled tunes (of all genres, sub-genres) are great any time of the day and night, and are almost all that i listen to these days.

I tend to choose beat-less ambient at night, especially during the winter.           www.myspace.com/orbitallauge

I had a wonderful time on two chillout stages at night: Moondalla 2006 & Ozora 2007. They had breathtaking visuals with deep meaning and I just love visuals! Sometimes organizers prepare something special for the chillout stage, like live performances for example.

Good chillout is much deeper then good uptempo, imho.

Holy necro thread. Five years later! I would think this would just be common sense. People should listen to what they like when they are in the mood! If they're not sure, then just go explore it! I'm primarily a chillout/ambient junky (shamelessly stolen from MaNaMaO) but my day or night will often see me loading up some trance, experimental, industrial, folk, ethnotronica, world, punk, etc.. The beauty of music is how it can deeply enhance your daily experience and affect your outlook on the world. It's all about what moves you at any given moment and not so much "When is best to listen to <genre>?".

P.S. - Since I'm being preachy... People should not be afraid to explore other types of music just because it doesn't match their Self-Image(TM). I just mean this in general. I have friends who are _so industrial_ they bleed hydraulic fluid and would never be seen listening to anything that runs counter to that. An open mind and open ears can lead to some amazing discoveries where least expected.

I'm working on making a more twilight version of chillout- incorporating day and night themes. Gives a lot of good variance to the sound and overall feel.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

hehe, i think it is good to sometimes resurrect an old conversation...

yeah, i agree. it all comes down to how you feel and what you like. I like all types of music, except perhaps death metal or death core or whatever they are called. I can enjoy all types. But i tend to put on chilled stuff at home and in the car more than anything else, i guess because that is what i dj and also because i love it.

that said, being open to other types of music can certainly broaden one's own setlist in creative ways as new associations and relationships between styles form.

Not to mention as one one ages - this is true for me at least, and a few people i know - my taste changes and i am finding that im getting into more traditional types of music like classical and folk to a lesser degree (styles i've also enjoyed, but am now loving) - not to mention old songs from the 30's onwards that my parents and grandparents would have enjoyed.

Oh so far my music tastes have come over the years, and who knows where they may lead in the future? probably not where i would expect, would be my guess.

anyway, that is way offtopic.

i do tend to agree with Kras' comment that good chillout/downtempo is much deeper than good uptempo. Definitely takes me to a different place.

Back on topic: As an example, Sovnigt Sind's music, and trippier stuff like that, i would say is more suited to psychedelic night time listening. Kuba and the like are definitely a bit more day time oriented. But I guess different styles lend themselves more to different times of day and even different times of year/seasons.... and even different stages in your life? (that is going out on a bit of a limb tho). And then, what works for me may not work for you at the same time.... so really, it's all up to personal preference i guess... (did i just take apart my own views then? hmm...)

"Post-industrial" ambient is better at nights then psychill. It's deeper, darker and above all, far more ritualistic & psychedelic.

Of course, you won't find it on psytrance festivals. Still, occultish groups know how to make a truly magical music!
