for using it first of all you need a stereo material. if you use m/s directly on mono there will be no result.
imagine you have a nice synth that is a main sound but it is in mono. you can start panning it etc, but again.. maybe it sounds dull and boring just panning it around. so you can put for example a stereo widening effect but somehow it give it presence but also an unpleasant metallic feeling (because of the widening), so here you can use the voxengo. if you want to apply further independent effects on the Mid and Side sections (why not) you will have to use sends if you are not in Ableton where you can use Racks directly on the channel without using sends. so split the signal in 2 sends and apply voxengo on each one (one for the mid, one for the side), but dont use it in inline mode. as you see it has mid and side gain controls, so I think the rest is clear.
anyway, i love to use the BX DIGITAL. It Is The M/S Monster!!!!! it has all in one. great great tool for superb control for the Mid and the Side sections. amazing!!!!

Bx digital i very coool, as it has a matrix built in so no need for other channels..
if you have mono sound on M/S u could put a stereo effect on the mono channel which will have an effect on Side channel - -cheers colin

yes yes indeed. i meant if you have mono signal the M/S will be functional if before it there is some stereo effect, (reverb, chorus, ST delay, spreader, widening, or whatever of this kind) so that the S portion can be feed...
I mean applying stereo effects over mono signals and than retouching it with MS matrix is like giving live to dead man. ehehehehehe
total resurrection!! aahahahaha

Great thread.
Can anyone list some negative aspects of M/S encoding (when to not use it, what when using it can foul up your sound, etc...)?
Thanks!

as it is mentioned before, when you work in M/S mode (there are plenty of effects, EQs, etc tools that work in M/S mode) always put an antiphaze detector (paz from waves, inspector from RN etc..) because you can have bad anti-phaze issues. so if this happens you will have to retweak some aspects so that there is no antiphaze...

mid/side processing is just One of the Greatest techniques I have come across too. and it is ooooolldddd oooooollldd technique used a lot in the vintage studios especially for recording vocals with 2 mics. one in mono and the other with a reveresed phase.
But as everything in this wolrd It Is Not Perfect! One have to adjust it very carefully and especcially depending over what material you will want to apply it. Also dont forget to put some anti-phase detector (mayble like PAZ from waves) so that you can be aware of the Anti-Phaze that the M/S can produce. if you detect antifaze well, Waves S1 can help a lot! but if you just shorten the stereo image, the side processing will loose power, so we have to go back and fix this.
So, with the M/S can be achieved A LOT! but be carefull though... it generates horrible anti-phaze sometimes.
Long Live the MS ehehehehehe
