OK so some clarification on some points

@XuN – its worldwide CD distribution through Arabesque and paid digital downloads through a digital distributor (ie distribution on all the major paid sites)

@the Daleks – After consideration, we feel that releasing tracks that are freely available elsewhere on the net doesn’t make sense, so we would be after exclusivity. There is nothing to stop you releasing other tracks as free downloads but we ask for exclusivity of the track(s) that we release. The Catawampii have and do release free downloads on other labels from time to time. If your track is accepted for release it WILL be released as a physical CD. Our first digipak release is coming soon and you will be able to judge for yourselves what you think of it. The artwork is stunning (Big thanks to Brad – www.izwoz.com.au) and we’ve had considerable interest in its release already.

@ seppa – Definitely. It is difficult to make money out of CDs these days – if money was our main aim, we’d just stick to our day jobs We aim to create a strong label profile and release top quality tracks.
We are established within the UK scene. 2 of the founder members of catawampus are party promoters within the UK scene (for around 5 years) and have been DJing in the goa/psytrance scene for over 10 years. We are well established within the UK and do bring in PAID overseas acts to psy events. We have very strong links with many other like-minded promoters around the UK and envisage promoting Catawampus acts within the UK.

We think this is a good deal and would love to have an opportunity like this and we think others will too – there ARE likeminded people out there and it is these people that we are looking for.

Catawampus Records the vehicle label of deeply underground and boundary expanding Psy-Trance producers. Created to push the quirks, funks and deeply soul entangling fimbriae of this musical genre, beyond Psy and into real Psychedelia.

sounds interesting, but what kind of psytrance are you aiming at for a compilation ?
i think you should define the style cause someone could send a dark/fast track , another a fullon or smthng experimental, you know
it cannot be different styles , isnt that right?

I know you have to start somewhere and i hope im wrong about this and that your label will be a succesful one.

But unless you have some supreme marketing technique to sell your music i seriously think you will never go anywhere with your label. Why? There dozens of labels just like yours who have started the same way with releasing compilations with tracks that where given free and almost none made any profit what so ever.

Infact i think that when you are a label down in the Free Track spiral it's really really hard to get out of it. Cause you sell less cause there are less known artists on your compilation.

In my opinion this is far from good for the scene, the only thing you do is put another compilation on the market which isn't 100% quality and then it just creates more confusion for the buyers on the shops. And you acutally take a few buys from compilations where they do pay the artists.

I think a good way to proceed in the begining is actually to loose money in the procees and to finance your CD's by making parties. Then when your label has about 5 releases it will start go better for you.

A perfect example of label being created not so long ago and being really succesful at what they do is Yabai Records.

Anyway like i said i hope i am wrong and that you will have loads of succes and make some money out of it and you'll be able to pay your artists for your 2nd compilation.

Let them send it...it's always good to have new music... however, most producers should really do their research first before sending tracks. My automatic response to posts like this is to check out the Label's myspace (GOSH!) and then listento the sample trax (O RLY!?). Then, to get a broader idea of their influences, I listen to the music of their top friends. If an artist can't get their shit together enough to work out what style a label is like this, then they shouldn't be sending trax to labels anyway. Simple band management 101.

Agreed Assaf, but that is not a reason to not give some money to the artist.

I am sick and tired of so called promotional gigs, I have done them for film here in Vancouver in the past until I said one day that "enough is enough". If people want to use my art and my expertise they should pay for it, just like I pay for a new plugin or for groceries in the supermarket.

That does not mean I am primarily motivated by money, but I gotta live off of something dude.

Of course there is always the other side, the fact that there are plenty rippers out there who do not hesitate to distribute freshly released sound all over the web, thus making it very hard for most labels to survive.

So some kind of compromise is needed.

To say that this is a promotional gig is not enough, given you have never even released anything before.
Like you said, all artists and all labels have to start somewhere. Start by doing what is fair to everyone and good vibes will come back to you, it really is that simple. If you pay the artists they might just remember you.

You know, artists may not ask for much monetary compensation, but some $ should be given, make it a $100 bucks per track, even $50 but make it something. It is only fair to everyone!

Good luck with your label!

1+ (by the way if i was to give a free track, id oughta be able to give that track to another compilation aswell as Im the owner of the track not you! im not gonna give the rights to my track and not get paid for it and 100 dollars is bullshit, pardon the language but its just bullshit, psytrance takes time... if it was a simple rap beat 100 dollars would be fine since rap music is fast and way easier to make but for a psytrance track that has many frequencies, lots of tracks and tons of automation hell no....
i got to eat man...

i dont see any logic in it too

unless you are going to make a promo CD for free

otherwise, making a CD that you are going to "sell" doesnt sound right not paying artists for the work

In fact sounds kinda lame asking exclusive unrls, and the ones you select you are not gonna pay, ummm weird

And i dont see whats so good for the artists, even for beginners. 10 years ago something like that would be a dream but today CDs are dead, even more for a label that nobody knows.. dont see wheres the promotion.

Maybe would be better to think in something like ectoplazm, with free promotional rls
... but making a CD you are going to sell and not paying nothing the artists is just so wrong, and sounds like taking advantage of new artists.
These kind of thing doesnt help much.

Guys now a days those who actually make money out of release in the scene are not many. Here you got an opportunity to make your track heard..

An opportunity to release a track on an unknown label...
and that still does not justify to sell cd's and not give anything to the artist

Personally I wouldn't give exclusivity like it is asked here unless I give it to established people in the scene (whether or not its a new label).

[quote]

That issue has not even been raised yet!

[quote]

why? because I would expect them to help me get to play at parties and use this release to promote me.

[quote]

That is true, but it does not justify to ask for a track for free.

Second you want to be associated with a label that releases music you like.

They have not even released anything yet, yes they might have some sound on myspace, but that does not tell me for sure what is going to be released.

Regardless of the fact that a lot of labels don't pay their artists (shame on them) that is still not a justification to not do pay the artist for his long work and vst-sound investments.

On that note I would like to add that as psy artists do it for the love of sound and not for money, so the labels nowadays need to consider that not much money is made from a label (if any at all). Add your label onto your events and there might be a winning factor.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:
