If this is off-topic, I apologize, but this is something every Californian should be aware of. They need about 700,000 signatures to add it to the November ballot:

I hope this succeeds. It would be nice to see reason, logic, and justice prevail (for once) in our wonderful system of nanny state laws - sometime within the course of our lives... |

Saw it yesterday when it was posted at Digg.com. Awesome news. The best part is that I will be myself moving to Cali in September so hope to have good times ahead.
All you Cali people, you gotta sign it!

this would be cool, and I fully support it for many reasons, but the problem is that it wouldn't be different than proposition 215 in the sense that the feds, DEA, etc, can still harass and arrest you under federal drug laws. So what we really need is the feds to respect california's laws which have been passed.

It is clear that California in general is moving toward total legalization.. eventually. But they just told the federal government to fuck off in regards to the medical marijuana raids. That was a major step towards re-establishing states rights. If they make another step now the federal goverment will certainly fight it hard.
There needs to be some time for everyone to get used to the current status quo and for the feds to accept that it is not getting overturned. Then it will be time to take another step. Politically I think it is not time yet. But I give these people credit for trying.

In the words of Gavin Newsom (mayor of san francisco): “As California goes, so goes the nation"

in my opinion, it's the perfect time to introduce such legislation, given the current state of the global economy. the strongest, and least politically contentious argument for overturning current drug laws stems from the economic benefits for doing so. with economic conditions worse than have been experienced in decades, combined with the U.S.'s decreased leverage in global affairs and a regime change on the horizon, it seems that support for this kind of legislation should be stronger than ever before. |

Aye!
It'll still be illegal for me to use pot if it passes as I'm subject to various types of drug testing at my work that is under the auspices of the federal Department of Transportation. I live in California. If one of these petitions comes my way, I'll be signing it.
America, land of the free and the drug tested.
Bunch of hypocrits. I guess we get the leaders and laws we deserve, eh? I've posted at length on this very subject in the War on Drugs tribe on tribe.net.
http://tribes.tribe.net/warondrugs/thread/04332c57-cb7c-48aa-b2d5-1cc9b9a3cf2a
This thread has three long posts by me and few others by the members. The original moderator was kind of radical, not that Negative Girl is any type of pushover either. Some of the other threads have some very hardcore views of drugs and their use. Another member doesn't use them at all, but thinks the laws need changing or fixing, especially where marijuana is concerned. Join up and post if something catches your attention.
This trance music and related gatherings are something I had never much thought of or considered existing as I've come to find out just recently exist as it does. Our society and so many people will repress and deny that such things are possible. If you don't like something, don't do it. Leave those that like to do something alone if we aren't bothering you in a direct manner. Trance music gatherings or pot use would fall into this category. Why the government represses trance music gatherings is beyond me. I am amazed at how healthy the majority of the participants are when compared to the general society. Doesn't the government and media implore us to be more physically active? Here's something that is fun and also brings people together for a common goal and yet all I hear from people that know nothing about it is negative things and guilty pleasures associated with it. I get the strangest looks from people when I tell them I am going out to the desert or the forest to dance all night with a group of strangers (and now some friends that I have made from attending) to loud electronic dance music. I can only imagine if I had short hair how I'd wreck their stereotype. I guess that part of me does fit in with the renegrade aspect of the underground music gatherings. My own health and stamina has improved greatly from March of this year just from the dancing alone. I have not once seem an act of violence at any of the events I have been at. In fact the whole attitude of "let's get along" and "let's make it happen" is something the rest of society needs to learn about and emulate. Though I could quite easily attribute this to the fact that most of the attendees don't consume large quantities of alcohol! Yeah, the legal drug that sure causes so many problems when compared to any other drug, but especially to marijuana which has never killed anyone and I've never seen pot smokers start fights like I have plenty of times seen people, even mild mannered people, start fights after consuming even moderate amounts of alcohol let alone lots of alcohol. Alcohol is an amazing drug. Subtle and blunt in its effects and so often very unpredictable. And it has calorie content! Tastes good too. No wonder it is such a problem to so many people.
Altered states of awareness is an entirely different thing and I have many years of experience, even if most of it is years ago experience. I do have recent experience with some drugs that I had not ever taken before and are amazingly legal to use. I have also discovered that the trance music itself can induce an altered state of consciousness in myself even while completely sober. This requires some effort upon myself and a certain setting for it to occur, but dancing and dancing with a lot of effort is fun, so it works out that I discovered this while having fun dancing. I am still learning about this and will be conducting ongoing research of it. Boom!
The old tribes of ancients must have been onto this centuries ago, and it certainly explains why aboriginal people nowadays still have tribal dancing as part of their societies, and of course lots of folk and herbal medicine are a part of ritual dancing and cures. I wonder how it is that so-called civilized society loses this aspect of our humanity?
Become a positive force for legalizing drugs, or should I say legalizing the drugs that we want to take? We live in one of the most drug consuming places that has ever existed, but we are only allowed to take approved drugs! I rarely watch television any more, but when I do I am stunned be how many drug commercials I am exposed to during a program or sporting event. Viagra and its related drug competition by far shows the hypocracy of our society and its view of drug use, let alone these drugs they advertise for treating depression. Geez, a shot of whiskey is lot safer and more effective than most of that crap, and I'm sure a couple of puffs on a joint would cure anyone's melancholy safely and effectively. Why do they fight marijuana so strongly? Or MDMA? Very safe drugs and they most definitely have medicinal uses that any doctor could give advice on if so schooled and many probably would if allowed to as they gained experience with how they interact with their patients and see for themselves if they are effective and in what situations. I happen to take the least amount of drugs of anybody I know that's anywhere near my age. There's nothing cheaper or better than good health. I don't know how long this will hold for me as I continue to age, but I'm happy to have been so fortunate so far. I think the only drugs I have in the house are aspirin which is expired and whiskey which I haven't drank in over a year now. I had to give the beer away as it spoils. I will be curious to test the whiskey when I start drinking again. I think the trick is to avoid sick people, doctors, and hospitals except when absolutely forced to. Check ups and regular exams are way overrated in my book, though it can be good to know of things early. Between the forms and the insurance rules, I think my piece of mind is almost worth chancing a condition going undetected. Once they have you in their clutches, they never forget and they're all buddies with each other when it comes to saying things like "prior condition" or "you've reached your benefit limits" or "this particular problem is not covered and now you have an existing condition if you go somewhere else"! Yeah, I'm paranoid, but sometimes they really are out to get me.
Hey, I rambling, but it's just some thoughts to wonder about. You ought to see what happens when I get on the soapbox and rant a little. Thank you for your time and consideration.
