Guys I just realised something.
When i was listening to the different types of monitors at the music store, the sales guy made me stand at least 4m (maybe even 5m) away from the monitors.
According to him that must've been the "sweet spot". Isn't that quite far away for nearfields? i've read that you typically position them in a 1.2m equilateral triangle...
Now I'm really beginning to think that this salesguy had no clue!
Could this exlain why I was getting virtually no bass response from the monitors I listened to? |

I shoulda mentioned this before, but it only just came to mind, if you have an idea which monitors you want, try having a look at www.soundz.co.za
They based in Alberton, but deliver anywhere in the country, they stock all sorts of music gear and low prices. discounts on everything.
I bought my bass guitar through them and their service is excellent, I'd definately recommend them

4 or 5 meters is way too far, the sweet spot is around 1.5 usually.

if you can try checking the speakers out in the studio you intend to use, they will sound quite different to how they do in the shop.
I recentley had a pair of adams, dynaudio & genelecs to try out and there was a huge difference between them (which wouldn't have been as noticable in the shop)
I don't think i'll every buy speakers again without trying them in the room they're intended for. |

OK, maybe I exaggerated a bit... 3m. Things always seem bigger/longer in your mind.
I took out the tape measure & checked this time.
However far it was, I can guarantee it was definitely not 1.5m.
Flip sakes... what kind of monkey was this guy?!
Actually I like monkeys... he was just stupid. |

My $.02 options, for what's it's worth:
1) Realize & accept that there is no perfect sound solution. Everything is a trade-off, so figure out what qualities are most important and stick to those as your main concerns.
2) You did one of the best things possible: going to a store & compare them side by side. No amount of reviews or online advice is going to makeup for listening to it yourself.
3) Unfortunately if the listening room @ the store isn't treated you may be hearing more of the room, especially in the bass regions. If it is not treated, and you can afford to, buy your top 2 or 3 models & take them home for A/B comparison. Make sure you understand the return policy & talk to the saleperson very well before doing this. There is a lot you can learn, and a great benefit to testing several models in your own room. If testing @ home isn't an option, make sure you walk around the listening room in the store when comparing, as you may notice some big differences which can be attributed to the room.
4) While there are certain quantifiable things you can look for in a monitor, there is a lot of subjectivity too. Trust your own ears over anything you read. People actually hear differently, and the super XK100 model of the year may not be the best choice for your ears, or your room.
5) You must acoustically treat your room at some point if you are serious about getting good results. Mediocre monitors in a treated room will very often give you much better results than very good monitors in an untreated room. Acoustic treatment should be your next purchases after your monitors.

i'm also gonna buy my first monitors so the thread its good..i've open a thread in equipment section but very few read there ;P...
so i'm in confusion too as the topic poster and in the price of around 400 - 500 euro i'm thinking about those models :
KRK - RP6 Rokit G2 €415.00 pair
TASCAM VL-A8 435,00EUR pair
M - Audio - BX8a Deluxe €335.00 pair
MACKIE MR8 200 euro unit
i've came closer to 8'' because i've read that 5'' monitors ''can't'' get enough low freqs for elecronic music...so which sounds better in your opinion? |

it depends on the size of your room,5 was small but 8 could blow up your room with low freq,if you room is in the standard measures not too big and not too small i would go for a 6.5/6.9 Monitor,i heard the rockit and liked them, all the rest i had no experience with them.
i would save the money a lil bit more and buy a decent monitor like adam a7. |

hmmmm yeah my room is in this size..not too large not too small.around 15 m2.so i was thinking that an 8'' monitor would be better for bass frequencies if you keep it at lower volumes than a 5'' one..but thats my mind talking ..i dont actualy know what is better for a room like that.i've heard people say that 5'' or 6'' is not enough for electronic music fat bass responce but i've also heard people like you saying that 8'' is too large for a medium room like mine...
i DONT know what i'm gonna buy
helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...is there anybody in there?

if your room isn't big enough buying 8" monitor is the biggest mistake you'll ever make and you would have to spend alot more money on acoustics becuze of the extra bass.
6.5 monitor will certainly do the job here, just buy a decent one that goes down enough in the low freq(between 37-43 hz).
i suggest you go and hear some monitors and see what grabs your ear, stand 1.5 meters and see the overall picture the monitor is offering you,and of course, don't consult with carl's sales guy
if it's possible,i would take a pair to listen in my room before buying,i know a lot of music shops allows you to(here in israel). |

hmmmm yeah this is ideal to take them with you in your room because i think theres a huge difference between listening in huge sound shop and listening in your room..but unfortunately the most shops here doesnt allow something like that..and some of the above models are only available to me through internet..thats why i'm asking for personal experiences of brands or models

The Dynaudios seem to be the favorite of many trance artists...the best of both mixing and mastering....I would say get those if you could.
however, if you are looking budget and have a small home studio, look at the blue sky exos for 349.00 us or the next step up which I believe is the media or pro desk (upgradeable to 5.1) and those are 699.00...sound amazing...clarity is awesome.....The low end can be tricky since it is a 2.1 set up, but if you have a decent room, Blue sky is amazing.......George Lucas uses them at Skywalker studios. I wouldn't master on the exos, but the media desk and pro desk you shouldh ave no problems. |
