Get the intel dp35dp motherboard wich is made for multimedia and a intel q6600 processor, now u have used about 350 euro's,the best graphic card is not necesary unless u are a vj aswell.
get some killer hard drives ,another 200 euro's.
For the rest of the money u can spend on nice ram and a cabinet (don't need the best around)Theres ur budget, killer pc for sure.
I know cause i just got one myself.

although phenoms are cheap.. good mobos are expensive they lack performance and are bad overclockers.
with this amount of money spend u could get a better deal on intels.
good thing i work on a computer shop.. i bought today a c2d q6600 and an asus p5k with 4g ram mushkin 1066mhz for 125e

haven't overclocked it yet, since i'm currently satisfied with it's performance.
also i'm aware that the Q6600 are faster,
but as german it makes sense to invest in AMD.
still thinking, that a good mainboard is more
important than which cpu you stick on it ...
as long it has AHCI enabled S-ATA2

Chipset is good enough?
I've been warned to buy something that has'nt got an intel chipset for music production.
So,does this work good on a DAW?

the chipset is not directly connected to the DAW.
all is managed through the windows HAL (hardware abstraction layer)
using AMD/NVidia for some years now and never experienced any problems so far.
there is just some differences between some
of the SSE4 instructions on Q6600 & Phenom 9850.
so the software developers have to take care of this.
i guess there will be no 64bit driver for my virus TI until native 64bit cubase will be out.
sonar is currently the only one, which currently supports that architecture ...
my recomendation: get Gigabyte or Asus mainboard (no matter if AMD or Intel) - they're rock solid and stable.
PS: if i would have been in Israel, i'd rather would have supported Intel (Quirat Gat).
is just some spleen of mine to tend to support local companies with my purchases

is also big problem on pre-configured consumer PCs ...
they always tell you the clock speed of the CPU
... but never which mainboard was used.
mainboard is responsible for stability - CPU isn't.
