In my opinion you should buy the monitor with the lowest bottom end as possible...specially for dance music!
One other thing the frequency range that we can hear goes 20Hz - 20Khz...
So if you are working with monitors above 45-50 hz when played in PA systems you will probably hear new frequencies and the music will feel a bit diferent!
If you dont have the money to buy the perfect monitor ,those above £500/750€ in my view, wait a couple of months until you got the cash... Dont compromise with monitors!!!
Go for the well Known makes like Mackie Event or Dynaudio wiht freq range around 40hz! Good Luck!

Well.. Actually very few PA speakers will play those low frequencys... And if its an engineered setup, then they probably will use cross overs and filter as necessary.
Have you ever heard a 20 Hz signal by the way? Not to mention the ammount of power needed to move the coil on those freq's...
And after all, I think all real producers are cleaver enough to know that, and they will check spectrums and use filters, if they sense there are too much low frequencys in their tracks.
Well, back to the topic. Its usually a mess to ask this sort of thing in a forum. Personally, if buying a new par of monitors, I would first talk to some friends in the business who I trust (and know what they are talking about) and then definitly I would try them and see for myself.
For me the best possible test, without taking the speakers from the store to your house, would be taking a laptop computer to the store and EQ some stuff in the sequencer you usually use. Borrow it from a friend if necessary/possible.. Nothing like sensing it like you would at home.. I think..

@ daniel duarte
What do you think about taking few waves (20Hz-20kHz) recorded on cd and testing the frequencie range with those? Ofcourse, also taking your own song to hear it because you know what sound do you want to achive. |

Thanks a million for all replies!!
I went to SamAsh today - I´m here in US for a few days, and I really liked the EVENT PR6 - also heard fostex (not my taste) MAUDIO BX-5 (too small) and the Samsom Resolv65 (a bit muddy in comparison)...
Anyway, they didnt have a new EVENT PR6, so I am waiting to see if they get it @ another store... lets hope so. I liked the sound better. Its very confusing at times and i might be a bit harsh with some good monitors that i heard, but that was my opinion on the moment i was listening to it. I will give another listen tomorrow.
I have also taken Pink Floyd and BT and Shpongle to listen @ the monitors. These guys are truly geniuses
Take care! Thanks again! I will post here when I buy one!

AMAZING BREAKING NEWS FROM MIAMI USA! LOL
After going to Sam Ash 4 times, and all of their staff getting tired of me there... I made up my mind.
First, an advice to all people thinking about buying monitors. Dont compromise on quality because of price. ITS NOT WORTH, in my humble opinion, to buy a monitor that costs less than 500 US dollars because plain and simple, they dont do what they are supposed to. They are either annoying on the highs, or they dont have low end, or they are too boomy, or they are muddy or all of them togther.
I made up my mind and got 4 mid class contestants for the final decision.
1) M-Audio Bx8a: $500... punchy, nice, but a bit too warm on the highs. It has power, it has bass, and its much clearer IMO than the sub $500 monitors I heard. I heard many. If you need names, ask and I post here...
2) KRK V8: $1000... killer sound. I love them. Powerful, very clear, good low end, you can see the work of the producers as you should. Very good imaging, it was very surprising when i switched to it. Of course... its double the price. Why wouldnt it be better eh! lol
3) Mackie HR624. $800... nice. Very nice. But in my opinion, as most 6" monitors I heard, not enough low end without a sub. clear sounds - they are mackies - i really enjoyed the sounds of mackies, but not a lot of low end, and i actually think the M-Audio had a better value at 500
4) Mackie HR824: $1400... AMAZING. The monitors I wanted to take home if I had the cash. I dont know about Dynaudios and Genelecs, and other expensive monitors, but this has absolute clear sound comparring to allother models and brands I listened to. I fell in love, but she was too expensive for me. WAY too expensive FOR ME. Ahhh soooo clear though, that clarity on the bassline feeling you have @ parties with huge systems.. .and the hats and synths and everything all in their place... ahhh
Well... the result is... I decided to buy the M-Audio Bx8a. The guy was getting a box for me on the stock... and I kept on switching between the KRK and the M-Audio... guess what? When the guy came, happy to have finally made the sale... I told him... listen... i know I MIGHT regret this, but please go back and get me the KRKs! hehehe I didnt regret it... YET... hehe and I dont think I will. Money is paper you know... it hurts but we work to make more... but quality is always a need... and it would haunt me everytime I was mixing or producing or whatever. I would have that feeling of "hey man, I think the KRKs would sound so much better now..." so yeah... KRK v8 is the winner for me!
I hope my multiple trips to the sound shop will be useful to everyone here that need to make a decision regarding this subject.
As final advice... to the people that want to spend 300 and cant absolutely spend 1000, go for theM-Audio option... the ones that can should really give the KRKs a listen and heck, for most of the europeans 1400 dollars aint THAT THAT much... so do yourself a favor and get the MAckies.
Thank you very much to everyone who have posted here! I appreciate all opinions and feedback. Now I cant wait to go back to Brazil and lock myself into my room when I get back from work hehehe I gotta justify the money somehow!
