i hear it was once something special but ppl tell me nowadays it is expensive, overcrowded, commercialized and full of cops. and i gotta admit the amount of coverage it gets makes it seem like some sort of mainstream-counterculture event. not really even interested to check it out myself, seems that there is much better stuff happening in california all the time and nevada law is quite harsh so why risk it. anywayz just my point of view of what keeps me away from it

Breaks DJ/Artist although I am not sure Burning Man was his big break.
|
|
he was THE Burning Man DJ, worked it for years, played several times each night, played the burner circuit events in Cali, then slowly started getting out to other places as well.
He's pretty huge now, plays to sold-out theaters all over. Not just breaks anymore - lots of whomp, dubstep, dnb, breaks, whatever works. Not a big fan of his music, but a lot of youngins love it.

Never been to burning man, probably never will. I could definitely get into it while I was there, and it would be a spectacle for sure, but fuck it. I can't be bothered. I don't want to pay all that money and spend all that energy just to wind up in the desert with crazy/dirty/naked/fuzzy/tripping people gawking at crazy art--the art being really the only reason I'd want to be there, which I would probably get tired of after a day--while attempting to enjoy the illusion of some free-for-all society. I'd rather go hang out in the mountains.

I never saw the need to spend 300 dollars to have a great time. I have never been to BM, so I would like to know why the fee is necessary? I have only heard, from people who have gone to BM, that they have a better time out in the forest, or wherever, and those things usually charge a minimal fee to cover costs, etc. Thanks for the input =] |

You can shit in the ground in forests... burning man has to have portopotties because digging any kind of hole in the ground is forbidden (damages the playa). That's probably a big chunk of the cost.
Forests also tend to have more moisture. |

BM pays huge fees to the BLM to use the playa, hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars, the porta potties cost like half a million for the week as well...somewhere on the BM website is a breakdown of the costs. they come in a month early to the playa and make roads and center camp...in short your huge camping fee covers "taxes" so to speak for living in the 5th largest city in Nevada for a week....also pays for the huge cost of cleaning up after you as many people don't have a clue what leave no trace means, part of the deal to use the playa with the BLM is that it has to be returned to a pristine state after the event
but don't get me wrong BM is a for profit organization, there are several people who make a full time living from working for the organization...
you can always buy your ticket early and save a good bit
BM is what it is, and that is all
some people like it some dont
I went once
I might go again

one of the biggest changes in recent years is the increase in interference from the authorities.
last year, some of my friends were busted just smokin a j. and the way they were caught, was creepy. the nevada police now have infrared goggles, so guess what, they can look in your tent from 50 feet away and see you fuckin/drinkin/smokin/playin scrabble or whatever floats your boat.
big brother is invading peoples privacy, they don't need probable cause to view you through the walls of your tent or rv anymore. they can assume you're doing something illegal, or be total perv's and watch you getting down like a clown.
my bro was shaken out of his tent by the police in the middle of a j, then put in cuffs, harassed, and given a hefty priced ticket after they saw his infrared image pass something back and forth with the other person in his tent. thankfully they didn't take him away, but that's enough for me to stay away now.
you want to be able to feel free and comfortable in an event this scale, but buyer beware, if you are into doing illegal things, the chances of being tossed out or put in jail is much much higher now.
the man is there in full force now. it is not a good place to express total freedom like you can at a smaller scale festival.
if you know how to be discreet and enjoy trying something different, then go. the art is top notch and a lot of it is interactive so you can have fun. Plus it's a great place to connect and meet fellow tribes from other cities.
for me, the obstacle i overcame to help me become a better person was to let go of my connection to being comfortable and trying to survive in one of the harshest environments on earth for a week (without an RV, tent camping recommended)
you have to go in there with no expectations because you need to just live in the moment when you're there. don't try to make a schedule either. when you wake up and feel energized, hop on your bike and pick a direction, then go explore. 7 days does not give you enough time to see everything either.
We are all family. We put the fun in disfunctional.

it was never meant to be for 'gawking' - it was meant to be a participant-only event. meaning, if you are there, you have brought/done/created/contributed something to the whole, not just there to be a 'spectator' of other people's effort.
but that's not really the case anymore, as it's become more of tourist destination than a participant event.

One suggestion, if your ever in the Midwest area check out Interfuse by the MidWestBurners in Missouri. Its basically the midwest version of Burning Man but a LOT more personal.
Its the first weekend in May usually and by far one of the best events I have ever been too. This will be my 4th year going and I will prlly never miss one. I am a die hard trance head and I have been to a lot of parties and this one is pretty damn epic.
They usually have a psytrance stage called the MindLicker Dome and people are always throwing it down. Along with about 7-8 other stages and a huge burn on Sat. night, throw in a nudist colony who always come, themed camp grounds, and lots of people giving away free booze makes for a EPIC time.
Its coming up the end of April and is only $30 bucks for 4 days of camping in a lovely spot. www.midwestburners.com Go there or pm me for any more info. Dont miss it!!!!
