Sorry if this is too similar to the previous thread.
Im curious what is commonly done regarding breakdowns, buildups, and other such things that break teh monotony and help catapult dancefloors farther and are generally just cool sounding, in a live set.
Im thinking of making some pre-arranged builds and breaks, with kick going crazy or something, so I can just trigger it and then get ready to bring in the next phase.
Id love to know other ideas, tips, whatever. Im just now setting out in this aspect...
What do you do/like/suggest?

For kicks use filter cutoff and low freq automation. |

would you say it would be best to have a prerecorded filter sweep, or actually twist a knob?
My idea is that, prerecorded builds = more complex, cleaner, plus frees up my hands and mind for sequencing the next patterns
but i want to know what otehr techniques are common

a mind bending buildup is a lot of programming work on several or all tracks, you neither do that spontaneously nor live..
no problem with tweaking a knob for a nice filter sweep though,
if the filter is already set on the bus you want to effect and linked to a knob you can remember on your controller. ;-) |

Im thinking, prearranged break, minus bassline, or kick or something, anyway not 'full', that way I can make a bass to fit it, on the fly. Also maybe have a breaks/builds channel, with automated filter sweep or something. Ive got ideas
I have an Effect Rack in the Ableton file of my live set, its a nice way to have multiple effects available on just one or 2 knobs.
(Quick tutrial; add effect rack, load it with effects of your choice, then mute all but ONE, click Map Mode above the Macro knobs, they turn green for me, then go down the rack, clicking the MUTE button then clicking the MAP button under a macro knob. Then, before exiting map mode, assign each one to their own section of the 0-128, for example fx1- 0-10, fx2 11-20 and so on. I actually have miine overlap for extra mania and the control is mapped to a fader, so I have the top and bottom fx only like, 0-5, and 125-128, as theyre just the top and bottom of the fade. If you did it right, you should be able to map to a midi control, then turn the knob or fade and the mutes will turn on and off in order. Then assign anotehr control for the on/off for the entire rack and youre done)

mudpeople, that's a really long way to go about it. Look up "chain selector" in the manual. It will save you a lot of time (and CPU)

...AND thank you Axis for showing exactly why I start threads like this
edit; so its kinda like what i already have, except... Better. I got the idea for the rack Ive been using from a blog I found looking for ideas using the microKONTROL with Live.
I REALLY need to read teh manual
Axis; can you give any insight on what to do about complex breakdowns and builds, live? . |
