Building a set

as much as important mixing i have a question about track selection, and the process of building a set.
except from common sence,  are there rules, what kind of approach  should i have ?
i try to think as a dancer and as a dancer i heard some sets that were too slow or too fast or too boring .
how do i make it interesting and intense but not too fast, and not too slow so the ppl wouldn't get bored ?
if i had a scale from 0 to 10 , i want to increase the tension to 7 or 8 and keep it and later take it all the way up and finish at some sort of peak point .
any ideas ?

imo,its all depend on how the dj who played before i dj, what time u dj or see the dancers reacting on every track. if u feel like everyone wants more power apart from build ups, cut the crap and u should play some kick ass track or ur special track. we dj for a dancers and they tell u what they want too, actually. so i watch them very carefully not to put wrong tracks cuz party itself is evolve.

a lot of poeple will tell u different things about this...
sumtimes "programming" is good- when u use some tracks cunningly- but tis best not to actually think about it. the real art is to just go with the vibe- saying there are definite rulez is quite a mainstream aproach... at the end oif the day, if u dont want to play a more upbeat track, then u wont. but dont just randomly string trax together- just play the vibe u feel.the vibe is the most important thing.

Leon, take it easy and play what you see infront to your eyes. relax, love your music, smile.

You're the DJ, do what you would like, and balance that with what the people want.

A DJ has to have his own style too =)

exactly!! too many DJs just play crowd pleasers. if evreyone played more of the music they liked, rather than what the crowd likes, the world would be fulll of lest irritating DJs!

anyone can play the records they find at their local HMV. to be a good DJ means not copying the way others do things

playing good music is kinda given since no one would play something that isn't considered good .
good is subjective, everyone likes different things, i was talking about how to keep the party going without burning it up too fast .

i might play something that a lot of people hate, if i like it....
its all about sensing what the people should want and will apreciate you for, rather than giing them what they ask for.

remember the bible, we are told god will give us what we really need, not what we want,
the clubbers are like 'foolish children'...
and im not trying to offend anyone saying that, im not actually suggesting the clubebrs are foolish, far from it (if they are at your set, how can they be?)

i am drawing a comparison.... you are the DJ, you r the father, you must give them what is truly necessary... this is why you, not they, are the dj

i don't agree with that at all .
not all, but a lot of ppl in parties know their music, so this whole patronizing "dj is a god" attitude is wrong .
