I´ve been having some problems with my latency and was wondering,

what value have you set for your latency in your sound card?

You propably mean 384 samples -> 8 ms latency.
I'm on 11 ms , sometimes 8 using same card audiophile 2496.            Peace, Love, Death metal

I'm using audigy (yes, i know, creative sucks big time) and with it I can go as low as 5 ms for output and 7 ms for input. It's low enough for running live audio through some effects. With bigger cpu load it starts to crackle, so I usually put it to 10 ms or so.

Remember that lower the latency is, the smaller the audio buffer is. And if your audio app doesn't get steadily process time (too many vst's running and occasional cpu time needed by other apps - for example apps accessing hd really hurt), it will miss the buffer updates -> it will sound as crackling as same piece of audio gets played more than once. With bigger latency (and bigger buffer) the app can update sound more infrequently and in larger chunks.

If you don't use midi by playing notes on realtime, it doesn't hurt to have latency of 50 ms. Otherwise go low as you can without the crackling.
