Artist: Broken Toy
Álbum: The Low Donw Dirty Sound Of Broken Toy
Label: Alchemy Records (ALCD023)
Format: CD
Released on: May 2007
Cover: http://www.saikosounds.com/english/display_release.asp?id=6513

Short Introduction:

Broken Toy is James Copeland, hailing from Cape Town, South Africa. He produces psytrance with a diverse style and a wide variety of moods for the dancefloor - from full-on to electro-funk, from deep and dreamy to tribal techno.

Musical influences are too many to mention - anything with groove and attitude, ranging from metal to electro-pop and gangster rap / hip hop. Previous musical experiences include being a guitarist and bass player in various metal bands during his angry teenage years, although this phase quickly gave way to a voracious appetite for electronic music, kick drums, and thundering big basslines!

His debut self-titled album 'Broken Toy' literally tore a hole in the psytrance scene with his cheeky basslines, ripping leadlines and tribal percussion, which has seen James tour all over the globe, throwing down his phat tunes. With a new follow up album in the pipeline Broken Toy is constantly unleashing his rawkus vibe onto unsuspecting dancefloors worldwide.

Through the tracks:

01 :: Whatever

This track has a sort of down tempo full-on, if that exists. It’s a good track for the opening. Very funky and groovy at the same time, always keeping the melodies pumping. Some nice effects, giving the track that Broken Toy spice. Nice start.

02 :: Down On The Farm

Still sticking into the funky side of music, this track has a very nice feeling. Nice breaks, a powerful bassline, the kicks are very crazy. Melodies always entering. Groovy as usual and with a great atmosphere. Many cool brakes on this one. Check out the samples:

- Look, where's this going? What do you want me to do?"
- There's sometimes a buggy. How many drivers does a buggy have?”
- One.
- So, let's just say I'm driving this buggy. And, if you fix your attitude, you can ride along with me. Ok?
- Ok!

That’s Adam Kesher speaking to The Cowboy, in David Lynch’s ”Mullholand Drive”. Great scene, great movie… GREAT SAMPLE!! Loved it.

03 :: Play Dead

This starts with a sweet melody, giving entry to the kick, which is very nice followed by the bassline, and some nice fx. It reminded me a bit of Rinkadink’s style. All elements are very well put together. Speciallly the groove, in this one. This is a very good track for dancefloors, imo. Will kick up anyone.
I found this one sample at full_on’s sample database. It’s from a track called “Sonic Soul - Pornodelic (Sonnenvakuum Rmx)”. Couldn’t find from where it was taking, Someone?

04 :: Change / Derange

Killer bassline on this one. And this voice saying “change me… derange me”. Kicking high also, the melodies and effects on this one are simply awesome. The groove enters high up, ans keeps on until a nice, calm break. Which doesn’t last long. Funky basslines and good kicks. Great energy on this one. Also very trippy track. Great effects reaaaaaaaly! Great track. It has this little Goa touch, on the final. Nice.

05 :: Necessary Roughness

Nice piano start. Very deep, and calm. Pretty solid track. Sort of the same bassline, but the melodies on this one are way more aggressive. The groove always has a different speed, reminding me a lot of Freakulizer’s style. Which is an awesome thing, imo. Has a B & W touch as well. Top quality shit. One of the favorites, for now. There’s a nice progression on the track. And the breaks are very nice as well. Excellent groove on this one. “Killargh”

06 :: Burst Into Fire

“- Do you think that if you were falling in space... that you'd slow down after a while, or go faster and faster?
- Faster and faster... until after a while you wouldn't feel anything... and then your body would just burst into fire. And the angel's wouldn't help you, 'cause they've all gone away”

This dialogue is from another David Lynch movie / tv series. “Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me”. Which is a great, mind blending movie. Check it out also. As for the track, still has that Freakulizer touch. The breaks, the kicks, THE GROOVE FOR SURE! The melodies also remind it. The effects in this one are way cool. Very funky, like the rest of it, but without giving away the dance floor taste.

07 :: Candy

“- Didn’t I say th word candy?
- I said I want candyyy!

I don’t know from where that was taken, but it’s a nice sample. The kid, demanding his candy. Nice trippy start, with a girls voice with distortion, a few kicks and grooves. It stays kind of quiet, and suddenly, it peaks the kick. Incredible, very well worked bassline. Such harmony in this one. Always surprising with the breaks in this track. The groove appears out of nowhere, and rocks the place down. Impossible to hold still while listening to this track. Great energy. Another favorite one.

08 :: Low Down And Dirty

Starts raising up the grooves, and breaking. Nice effects on the very first start. Don’t get tired for me saying this again, but the same funky style bassline. A cool brake, rising up again, and then BAMM! Groovy and uplifting, and also very creative track. Loved the effects and melodies on this one. Good one. “Get on down!” Sweet! That distorted voice is something. Real cool.

09 :: Heavy Structured

“I ain’t scared of you motherfuckers”

That’s Bernie Mac’s voice, from some of his comedy tv series. Great actor. The track is very Rinkadink style. If a bit of HOMmega on it, in terms od production quality, and effects. Again, reminding me a fusion between B & W, Rinkadink and Freakulizer. Is is possible to be bad?? Not at all. Another monster track from the cd. Very creative shit.

10 :: This One Thing

- You know what I do when I feel completely unoriginal?
- What?
- I make a noise or do something that no one has ever done before. And then I can feel unique again, even if it’s only for like a second.

- This is your one opportunity to do something that no one has done before and that no one will copy again throughout human existence. A-And if nothing else, you'll be remembered as the one guy who ever did this. This one thing.
-

That’s Natalie Portman (oh my) talking to Largeman in “Garden State”. A great movie also. Funny as hell. Great chilling melodies at the start, until the basline enters. Very cool modern flow in this one. The same style, which dind’t tire me up. I just love doing it all over again, and again, and again.

Bottom Line:

It’s a great, fresh, innovative cd. All the samples are just great as well. This guy must really like movies. Specially David Lynch. I LOVED the samples he used in all tracks. The Bernie Mac’s one, is awesome.
Anyway, a must have CD to all of those who appreciate a nice full-on, with some cool intensive shit.

BUY IT!

My Regards to all!

Thanks alot mf!

But to be honest, track 7 was the only sample that I couldn't recognize.
I worked for 8 years in a video shop, from 13 to 21. Now you see the reason to know them all?

As for the rest of them, I've seen the movies several times.

Now tell me: Why do you think you wont like the album?? Give it a chance mate. I'm sure it won't disapoint you.

Best Regards!

Awesome album. Wasn't a big fan of the Broken Toy sound earlier, but I am a believer now.

Bought this, 'cuase I've seen him 3 times and loved the first album. Quite honestly I think its the biggest pile of junk that I have ever heard, and am vastly disappointed with the result.

Serves me right for not listening to it first and trusting the name too much

My favorite album of the year so far. Jimmy has more funk in his trunk than ANYONE in psytrance. I dare you to find funkier basslines! This album makes the dancefloor explode time and time again when I spin it. Now if we can only get his Visa sorted to come play in the USA... sigh.

and to b2c, I know that it's all a matter of taste, and different strokes for different folks and all that but... you did say that Alien Project's new album was "made in heaven".

please for the love of all that is holy, don't ever take anything I say seriously.
