Ive been playing around a bit with volume
automation and bring the volume down on a instrument when other instruments/ fx comes in. I Believe i read som where that the listener can only pay intention to a few sounds at the same time. What do you think about this?

That’s how top notch mixing engineers do their mixes, give mix focus, energy and movement (mostly before/after choruses), about listeners, you are listener too, never dismiss that, many people become oblivious about what they are doing, but have ear for someone’s else work, I think some distance should be there and what is most important, you should be ready to dismiss bad ideas and some things that took you long time to do, but they does’t work, but yes, too much elements steal focus, not to mention make your mixing task harder, less is really more, repetition makes that hypnotic feel, things that are always the same are accepted and new ones are starting to get registered and followed, I think it’s good idea to steal focus with automations and give some elements/passages more impact, so the deal is to cleverly design whole grid like that, calling&answering with limited focus and maintaining interest, motive, syncopation and actual story, never dismiss the fact that things that are already going are things that are not in focus that much anymore after some time and things answering to them are things that will be captured immediately, more than something that just gives actual elements more definition, like layers of same thing.

that can work. but try to keep in mind some limits, like a ceilling for your sounds, dependant of where they fit in the mix.
you can also do clever sidechain work between elements, and automate the envelope settings carefully, to get a more natural sound - all this takes a little work of course, but sometimes works better then simple sound x followed by sound y, if you know what I mean.
also, little volume edits sometimes make a big difference, like bringing the volume down just before a drop, even if just for 20ms, can make a huge difference, same thing with filtering and panning.
don't know what daw you're using, I've done this more for other kind of work besides making psy tunes, but anyways: if you draw/record the automation by hand with a fader, for example, you'll easily get way to high and way to low at times. no problem, you can select just the lowest points (or highest) in the automation curve and edit those at once back where you want them to be later, so as to keep dynamics in check, but this way you'll also get the added manual touch and organic feel into it - if that's what you're looking for. and maybe we could all do with a bit more of that for sure! cheers |

overwhelming the listener by making intense music with more sounds than can be payed attention to (while sober) is part of the charm of some kinds of psytrance. |
