IMO one of the best tricks is to provide changes in the "energy level" without having to use breaks with long build ups all the time.

i think breaks r indeed good to build up more energy & to create a atmospheric story to flow of ur energy but after all its upto a dj to select what tracks he wants to play.
i guess the breaks also helps one to have control over his flow of energy.

breaks are welcome when they're intelligent.
a lot of artists use them nowadays...
but less of them know the right formula.
Mr. Tim Sensient is a good example of mind-blowing breaks for instance.
in general, it's all a matter of taste and how u define breaks which know to be very psychedelic at certain times if used and not missused

When I DJ I like to include only one or two long breaks in a set so I just drop a hard kick at the first bar of the break and that way it is all 100% trance. . .           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

Yeah massive 2 minute long buildups are fucking annoying and remind me too much of hard trance. However, in darkpsy, I like having those really atmospheric breaks of swirling noises and amelodic type stuff.. then BAM the kick and bass schlams back in out of nowhere. Sicknutz.

YES YES YES!!! Thats the tine i just go completely outofcontrol ballistic mayhem crazy... in those cases every break takes you to a new level... i love it i love it i love it.....           the moment i take one i feel like... i need another...

Style and taste..

I would say that a high amount of breaks is good in certain tracks and styles, the only thing i don't like is when a track has a huge break that keeps building and after the break it drops off to something not as energetic at all..which I see in a lot of melodic stuff these days..

yes.. i know what you mean... thats about the time i stop, glare at the dj and walk out for a break... then i have to come back and get into the flow all over again... so annoying...           the moment i take one i feel like... i need another...

The problem imo with many of the breaks that are used, is the nature of how predictable they are. You know when the BOOOOM is coming and usually there is such a big buildup that the BOOOOM doesn't live up to the buildup.

Of course there are breaks that are used that come out pristine, and i truly believe it has to do with the cleverness of how it is used as opposed to the fact of using a break to just do it.

Again, my psy friends : Good to see that this subject gets some attention one way or the other.
As some say : Breaks has to be intelligent, short or tell a "small" story before launching off again.
Tracks with many, and long, breaks, are annoying for me as a dj. One long break in the end is no problem to mix away, but with 3 long breaks... You get a bit messed up track somehow when U keep mixing in the other track all the way. It ends up something similar to breakbeat? Normally I skip most tracks with more than 2 breaks in it (depending on the time of course). Check out EVP and "see" how he does it, or "Reality Grid". I love those long traks with just 2 breaks in it. 1 short, and in the end the 2'nd wich normaly is not to long, and it has something to bring in to the tune (I think at least that).

Another post I have, is about vocals in tracks. If you have a view on that, follow this link :

breaks of 15-30 seconds is fine, especially when I am mixing seriously full-on morning tunes- a chance for people to have a short rest, take a breather - but I never mix 2 of those back to back or even use TOO many in one set. Longer breaks always do end up sounding somewhat "hands in the air" not just because of the length of the break- but usually because the producers that use long breaks make them cheesy sounding.
The reality is that some of my favorite producers have noticed the really big money and turned to the dark side and are now making tracks like that. 3-4 minutes of good music, followed by some HUGE break, vocals and all- but hey...this can all be mixed out.
The problem is, I would rather not support them making crap music buy actually buying their music just to mix a PART of that track. Maybe if no one buys it, they'll go back to making great tunes???

ahhh..wishfull thinking
