Hello All,

Have a few questions if you don't mind. i am working on my second track now(so, you can imagine my level of music knowledge. ) and am kind of stuck. well not really stuck but i want to improve in this area - Build ups and Breaks. If you guys could give me some ideas it would be great.

So, how do these two, fit into the arrangement of a track? Do they have to come and go every 16/32 beats? Is that a rule. I know I know, they say don't follow rules but if i had breaks and build ups all over the place won't the flow of the track be affected? how do you guys do it?

Oh, some tracks have these really long swooshes and as they keep rising as the build up they are also twisting and twirling really vigourously? Is it just one long not with a rising pitch and fast LFO? i want to make more of these so, if you have any secrets, please share!

Finally, most of the time, i just use like kick rolls or a double kick for my break or some percussion but its very boring. So any ideas in this department would be helpful.

Ok, Thats it for now and Thank You all for you time.

bharath.

M8 arrangement is the most serius and difficult thing.
I would suggest to follow your thoughts listenning to it and fill in/out as the track goes.
Try analyzing the music you hear and day by day it will flow better

For some nice swooshes download EYB's free vsti "fm spiralator"..

If you're using cubase try to import a song that you think has nice structure, into your project & then you can visually see how they build & break it up..

Usually before a breakdown you can stop some elements playing for the last 4-8 beats (e.g take bass out etc)

Like you said there are no rules, just experiment..If you're only on your 2nd track you've still got a long way to go! Good luck..

No they don't have to come up every 16/32 beats. Whatever you do - make the best out of it. Just don't stretch it too much or it will sound repetitive, wich eventually will become boring.

the classic buildup in trance - a.k.a. rising effect can be achieved using different techniques: filters, even eq, transposing buildup part one or two octaves higher, adding new sounds etc etc.
but honestly it's all same old same old.
anyway when doing build ups, try to think of it as reaching orgasm. you pick a line, build on it, twist it, add some tease, and then bang you reach the pick.
personally i think the best buildup ever: is of New York hard house producers and dj's. those guys use every single element to drive crowd insane. and lately trance (which has been known and loved for massive buildups) is loosing it..

yeah drum rolls are getting very old. try to expand on top of it. sometimes even weirdest ideas might do your track good. for instance taking some elements out of other music styles: hip hop, d'n'b whatever. Just experiment. If you use drum roll for breakdown part, you could replace it with drone sounds/SFX, or stabbing chords, or even smoothly fade drums/whatever out - anything that sounds good.
if you want to get some ideas about breaks, give aphex twin and technical itch a listen. those guys are insane when it comes to breaks.           www.venomous2.com

as deo said "anyway when doing build ups, try to think of it as reaching orgasm. you pick a line, build on it, twist it, add some tease, and then bang you reach the pick."

some of best build were sampled from porn, some girl going wild and really screaming your lungs out. girl coming really like to have a delay in triplets on thier voice.
once you build good porn will provide you with a nice sample for a break to/ one of my favorites was "you came in my mouth"

it definatly gives the track a silly charecter, but thats what i like. hope i helped

i can think of two names right now:
1) Sin-nuh - Mike Monday Remix (don't remember the original artist name, but still Mike Monday remix is worth to check)
2) This is the Life - Funk Doctors

massive buildup and tease, reaching the climax point you'd think imposible to reach.           www.venomous2.com

No rules .. Open your mind and be free
Make 3 make 6 breaks in all over the track or more .. But make them interesting .
I dont think thats mater how long the break are is just make him curious . At those sec's try focus on yours fantazys (That what i do - Dark track with a softly breaks , Think about ! What lovely it can be .. Try it .. You will give some live to it) Your dreams . Percusions sure .. Very import ! In the breaks and differents after) . Try samples (Talking peoples , Deads screams .. !) , Loops , What ever .. and put them there . Mellodis . Nature , Water , Birds , Or all together .

Well .. Ther is many things that you can do .. try to think and it will come from your inside .

Good luck !

make 20 - 30 'finished' and 1000'ths of unfinished tracks (just make them, be VERY critic and listen a lot to other ppl's track you liked)
I did it this way too

Greetings and good luck

Apologies for being vague and imprecise and all that malarky but...

The best way to do it is to make it from the mind... there's no quick fix, no rules.
For me the key to a drop and a buildup is to twist expectations.
I'm going to have to use the orgasm metaphor again... you build it up (enjoyably) and then it happens.
But you want to prolong the feeling, make it last longer, tantric style

So you subvert expectations, do something original... make the crowd jump when they shouldn't jump... and then slam it in and surprise everyone with the power.

But if you make it last too long...
It's just blue balls for you bro

In other words... just put it where it feels right!
(Do that with your music too)
