Compiled by Jay OM. Nine tracks, from some of the hottest artists about. Polaris, Tron, X-Control (Perplex project with DJ Kido), Ultravoice & Tactic Mind, plus, up-and-coming London localities, M-Theory (Cimi & Monastic Squid), Journey feat. Max Stellato, Star~Trip and M-Klome. Brand-new tunes, specifically written, each one set to be a future-fave on dance-floors around the world, indoor and out.

Fledgling Psy-trance label Free-Spirit Records, coming straight out of London, presents it's inaugural release Free-Spirit Compilation Vol.1 - Brahmaputra, though the only Anglo-centric aspect of this collection, of new and exclusive tunes, is the label's UK base. Rather it has a distinctly multicultural zest thus mirroring today's international psy-scene.

Brahmaputra is compiled by dj and label manager Jay OM, he of the ever-increasingly popular London party Implosion fame (celebrating it's third birthday in September 2006), who's ever-friendly demeanour resulted in being able to attract , from a variety sources, a selection, all of which are original, purpose written and unavailable elsewhere. With each set to find favour on dance-floors worldwide, both in-door and out.

Contributing artists, some well known some not quite so, include French writer/producer Polaris, his composition Energy the perfect example of complexity of arrangement and crispness of sound, for which he's known. The collaboration between Israeli Ultravoice and Romanian counterpart Tactic Mind creates the no-nonsense, head-down, go-for-it, Mind Control Vol.2. There's Mexican born Tron, fast becoming one of the most sought after morning-djs around, whose Evolution Revolution manages to be both, hard hitting and melodic. X-Control is Perplex project with DJ Kido, both Israeli, teaming up to produce Dragonfly, hovering and floating, with sudden direction changes, just as the name envisages. Italian Londoner Marchello, well known around town after being resident dj at Fairy Tales and Chichime, with Rob "Monastic Squid" Nichols are M-Theory - their Unrestored, fat and funky underpinned by a morning melody. When Jay OM enters a studio he's transformed into Journey, and working with Max Stellato he gives us Spotless Mind which drives hard, with a stop, look up at the stars moment, before continuing onward. Max Stellato also is one half of Project FM, the other half being Fabrizio Motta. Their Kickwave rolls with an ever-accumulating energy that invigorates all those in it's vicinity. Star Trip is a Journey project with Evil Twins, a dirty grimy - Dollar, the consequence. M-Klome emerges from his laboratory with Bad Chemistry which, like Jekyll and Hyde, is constituted of good and evil in equal measure.

Each track with enough quality, as a self-contained piece of music, to stand-alone, put them together and Brahmaputra becomes a killer without remorse. Consider yourself warned.

Free-Spirit Vol.1 Brahmaputra review courtesy of DMG

As the old saying/cliché goes when travelling to a new destination it is often the journey that provides the greater enjoyment and so it can be when discovering new music.

Like most psy fans I get my kicks from a variety of sources, presently I’m a Londoner and as such one of those outlets is the monthly Implosion parties. Held in Brixton, I’ve been a regular for the last couple of years, as much a fan of the how-it-should-be good vibes as the dj’s - a stable of residents augmented by the occasional big name - and the music they play. 21st century trance is the way I like to refer it, reflecting the intelligence and diversity of the world we live, whilst maintaining and appreciating those elements of music which are timeless and found universally across all genres. So big-up the Implosion parties.

I also like to take my needs for psy-satisfaction outdoors (don’t we all) and have attended Sonica 2005 as well as this years event, Sonica 2006. Now usually I don’t find much cross-over between the music I hear clubs to what I do at the big outdoor events, believing it is much a general reflection of the contrasting environments as it is the sheer amount of good music being produced. So there I was my first day at Sonica ’06 happily dancing away in my own little world, as usual, when something happened to prick my consciousness. It was like, “I know this tune”, but I really did not make too much of it. I am no dj slut and thus made no effort to see who was playing, think maybe I just danced with a little more enthusiasm - no mean feat. But anyway later on that day/evening it happened again, the next day, again, so by this stage I was starting to think that all those many years, spent dedicated to pleasuring my urges, were beginning to show results.

There I was stumbling around the campsite, as you do, my ego inflated with feelings of self-importance, when I quiet literally bumped into Jay aka Jay OM aka Implosion’s promoter. Before we had even completed our exchange of pleasantries I was all over him about how I’d been hearing all these tunes I knew and how some of them I was sure I’d heard at his parties. His response was to ask which DJ’s had been playing these tunes and I was like “I dunno”. By him then asking which time it had been, and where, we were able to pinpoint a little more accurately those who may have been responsible. To which he informed they were just as likely to be playing tunes off Free Spirit vol1 - Brahmaputra, which he had just finished compiling. I had never heard of any of this and my blank expression probably conveyed as much, Jay’s oh-to-cool response was to casually reach into his backpack and whip out aforementioned item, PROMO ONLY clearly plastered over it. I don’t remember too much of the rest of the conversation, I’m sure I was polite, but by now my ego was off the Richter scale. Don’t really remember too much more of the festival, though this was due mainly to other factors, but the first act on my return was to regale my flatmates with story, flashing the CD about as if to emphasise, before we rolled up on the couch to listen to it’s contents. Before long they were “I know this tune, I’ve heard this before” though I am not sure whether this was true or they felt belittled in the company of my delusions of grandeur. Though with the CD containing contributions from the like of Ultravoice, Tron, M-Klome, X-Control (Perplex project) and M-Theory (plus Jay OM as Journey, Star Trip) as well as them also being ardent fans of Implosion, there was every chance they were telling the truth.

And remember how I began by saying that often the greatest enjoyment is found in the travelling to, as opposed, the getting to? In this case it doesn't apply, as wonderful as the journey was the pleasure of listening to Free Spirit vol1 Brahmaputra will always far out-weigh.
