Silly question here. What is the difference between the Box version of CPU and the Tray version. I see 20$~ difference between the two. It's same processor but on one of them written Box and on the second written Tray.

Possibly the Same Difference as OEM and Retail.. Retail u get the nice packing manuals etc..and driver CDs and other essential stuff.. OEM is just the component.. no box no other stuff...           ....good fudge comes on slow!!!

Plus there is the risk of a tray CPU being modified by some bastard so you get a 2200 that looks like a 3200 but that doesn't work properly.

As I found out.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Lol noobs

I guess the difference is that with the most expensive one it follows a cpu-cooler, so you wont have to buy this seperately. The boxed cooler are usually quite bad tough, often noisy and less effective than other standalone coolers sold.

There is not a driver cd included in any way, because u dont have to install drivers for cpu's, only the motherboard drivers.

Colin OOOD, all cpu's sold are just clocked cpu's to a certain point, where they are testet that they are stable. So an AMD 3200 and 3500 is just the same cpu (as long as they have the same amount of cache memory) but clocked to different speeds.

Yeah, but to buy a 3200+ and have it come up as a AMD Mobile 2200+ is well dodgy, particularly when half the links on the top of the CPU's circuit-board are covered by suspicious-looking 'warranty void if removed' stickers...           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Doh! That's rough Colin.

Are you sure your bus speed is set correctly?

And what does your multiplier in the BIOS clocking section read as?

But, uh, yeah, the serial numbers are always supposed to be visible so you can tell what it is... Argh.

I took it to my local PC service shop to be checked out after it refused to boot on my mobo (which should be compatible) and they told me that on their system it came up as a completely different chip. I sent it back to the shop and they told me the same.

The serial number was completely visible; it was the links surrounding the CPU die that set the internal characteristics of the chip that were covered by stickers, implying that some of them had been modified.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I bought this one at a computer fair. I'm only buying original boxed CPUs from now on.
BTW the company that I bought the CPU from has agreed to refund me what I paid for it.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Hey,
My cpu is a amd 2.4ghz but the clock only says 1,99ghz.. Was i stoled by the guy that sold me it or is it normal?
There is also one think u all should whatch out! When buying memorys, just buy at stores that u really trust, because memorys apparently work fine sometimes when u stick them into the motherboard (when u turn the computer on, the memory counting apparently works just fine), BUT, it doesnt mean that the memory is working great. There are some "program tests" that analizes the memory sectors, and show u infos about damage parts of your memory. I guess it is possible to find those "tests" on the internet.. if someone know any, just drop here

The clock speed for AMD processors is always less than the name of the chip would suggest. An AMD XP2400+ is supposed to give approximately the same performance as an Intel chip running at 2.4GHz, but actually runs at a slower clock speed. This is completely normal. Your chip is fine.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

the clock rate itself does not say much if the underlying architecture differs.

example: change from single cycle to multicycle instruction architecture and you will have a k times higher clock frequency without any change in instruction time (some small code snippet e.g.).

The difference between the boxed and non boxed cpu is not the same as OEM or Retail...

It is, as Fragletrollet pointed out, whether it comes with a standard CPU cooler or not.

I got a boxed version of my CPU and I would not advise anyone, with the slightest knowledge of what cooling to get, to go for a boxed version. The cooler is so noisy that it gets REALLY annoying at times... Getting a new cooler myself...           *In AjmaGard We Trust*
