In November 2007 we played at one of Australia's most well known outdoor festivals. To attend this event we traveled about 3000klms which included 8 hours travel in my car, return flights from Sydney to Melbourne, car hire and a further 5 hours travel, plus accommodation expenses for 1 night.
The problem? The promoters will not pay us the agreed performance payment of $600.
Now before you jump to the promoters defense please understand that all reasonable efforts have been taken to ensure that the matter has been dealt with. Indeed, the promoter, contacted me after I made a post in relation to these dealings. I listened to a number of personal reasons as to why the payment had not been made and was given a guarantee of payment within a week. Two weeks later - no payment.
I suspected that we were not the only acts not to receive payment, so in the meantime I made some inquiries. I contacted 8 other artists who performed at the festival. 6 responded that they had not received payment. 2 did not respond. Further googling located a page suggesting that this practice has been going on for some time.
Another festival is planned for this November 2008 and the Corporation have plans to take the brand global to Japan and the UK.
This information is being provided in the hope that it reaches other artists who can make an informed decision about being involved in these festivals, and potentially avoid an unsavory and costly experience.
Correspondence is available on my site and makes for some interesting armchair reading - http://baseelectro.net/?q=node/397.
