Well, I'm working on my first track that is getting so intensive, I need to bounce sections of it down in order to continue sequencing smoothly. Is this a common occurence when it comes to production? I'm guessing that tbe best way to tackle this is to export a track in sections as it's being sequenced and mixing the sections together into one seamless track?
I might be upgrading to a laptop soon, so I figure more RAM, a faster CPU and a proper sound card could at least minimise the need for frequent bouncing?
What do you think of the mix? Every channel has gone through its own treatment and I've spent about 18 hours on these 2:30 minutes alone. This sample hasn't been mastered or finalised, but you can expect the finished version to be. (If I ever manage to finish sequencing )
I want this track to be very dynamic and very full-on but do you think I'm moving between movements too quickly?
The one thing I'm not too happy with is the chopped up kick bar at around 1:56. For some reason I can't get the first beat of the next bar to come through clearly without being masked by the last finely-chopped up beat of the preceeding bar. Any suggestions? (Or does it sound decent?)

Edit: Hehe, it was the "enable MIDI output" that was chowing my CPU, so that's sorted. But I'm still having trouble getting that post-climax beat more defined. |

soo, I'll give you a few general hints
first, there are way too much mid frequencies in you bass and kick...try to use some multiband distortion on them (but each seperately)
and try exciting your percussions a little...in my opinion they got too less high frequencies
then, your intro is a bit long...it takes a too much time till something starts to happen there really imo
so about the part at 1:56, just bounce those chopped kicks down single and put them as one wav in your track...then cut that wav where the bar finishs should do the trick, the thing happening is that the end of the last chopped kick goes into the beginning of the next real kick....you could also avoid this by just shortening the last kicks, but imo its smoother with all bounced to one wav
so but overall its a nice track already, keep on working
oh and when I got you right with your already solved question, never bounce a whole section in wav and put it in the track again...always just bounce single sounds when you re bouncing to save cpu
happy tweaking

Scariest sample ever.. No happy music here!
You're panning is very hard, try and balance frequencies on each side, unless you're going for an effect.
Sounds clean though

Thanks for the tips guys. MadScientist, thanks for ya input about the bouncing. I always thought the plan was bouncing your song down in "scenes" and putting it together afterwards. Thanks for the heads-up!
I'm mixing with Sennheiser HD280 monitoring headphones at the moment, because I dont have the option of using speakers. I'm probably going to leave the intro as is, I prefer building an atmosphere (comes from my Darkwave/Industrial background).
I had a bit of trouble with the kick, it's the Infected Kick sample availabe on the site. I love the thump and boom of it, but hate the high-end shaker effect it has going. Also, I added more mids to the bass because I thought it sounded too dark without them, however I'll take a listen to the mix with increased mids. Thanks for your input! |

np for that sure u can leave the intro, thats taste
but like I said, try some multiband distortion on each seperately, bass and kick...thats exactly how you can get that it hasnt so much highend, without such a dull sound
I strongly advise you to get some monitors mate...that will do a lot your sound

Heh, I wish, at the moment I can only sequence in the evening and I need to keep things *shhh*.
I have a decent pair of cans though, and the hdphx plugin. Before I was mixing on a pair of 5.1 desktop speakers, so these are a lot better methinks. |

Hey! Cutting the mids from the kick and fattening up the bass a bit really has made a huge difference. The kick has this more guttural oomph to it which clears up the whole mix. I raised the the levels of my 60-80hz on the bass just a notch higher than they were before and cut most of the mids. It's gotten it sounding thumpier. |

yeah, i like too cut 500hz from some kicks, to make them cleaner and to make the bass fits better.
i don't think cans are good for production, psytrance is supposed to be played on a big rig at a parties...... not on cans.
some frequencies reach the ear at different times when played through speakers and thats why mixing/producing with cans is tricky, but not impossible though.
i don't like mixing with them because there seems to be no feeling and they give me a headache after about 10mins.
but if your going to use cans i would suggest to learn them inside out, learn how they translate and be careful with your ears, don't have them to loud.
