http://www.sampleswap.org/ for good percussion samples/loops.
If you want to rearrange the loops get ahold of recycle or something.
If you boost the highs in the rhythms section and then increase the volume of the rhythm, then yes the highs will be too loud.
Generally it's better to cut than boost because you can create some weirdness in the phase by boosting...
BUT
And this is key:
IF IT SOUNDS GOOD, DO IT. |

it's always better to cut than to boost
the effect of boosting certain freqs can be achieved by cutting others
when boosting try to not boost the fundamentals but the harmonics or the transients in prcs/drums
  roll a joint or STFU :) |

very possible.. but yet i dont mind boost.. but its realy depends on the original sample if its allready ok and u boost then why ? but if it lack lets say 3 db in 12000hz i will boost it
beside that.. eq boost also dont mess to much harmony if u do it right and not too much. dont forget cutting probably effect the harmony more (in bad way - each instriment sounds better with all its basses) but sometimes its essential to cut for the mix. www.sattelbattle.com

you're right, most of a sound is in the lower freqs
onde i began boosting the high mids of everything in a tracks (why? it sounded cool hehehehe) and suddendly things stopped fitting...
also, supposedly there must be a -3 drop in the top highs in a finished track.. but mayb that's a job for the mastering guy roll a joint or STFU :) |
