I was at the Universal Audio website and I came across a tutorial on one of their EQ units.
It claimed that their EQs with seperate knobs for boosting and cutting the low end could be used at the same time. ie - boost, then cut at 100hz to produce more solid bass AND affect some of the high frequencies AND cause a dip at around 350hz.
Sorry - I've lost the page, I'll keep looking.
I suppose any other EQ with these functions might work the same if is modelled on analogue - such as Nomad Factory.

But what is this doing? Does it actually work?
edit: found it

um, no it doesn't cause a phase effect.
My understanding is that the CUT is basically a HPF or LPF (depending on which side you're cutting) and the BOOST is a big fat resonance knob for that filter.
but it sounds better, to my ears, than just doing it with a filter. I use the damn things all the time. |

some older EQ units (hardware) had both boost and cut for the same frequency.......caused a phase type effect which was very musical.......a few software developers have replicated this..............thats my understanding |

Interesting! <rubs chin..>
In some respects I like an EQ with no graphic display - it forces me to use my ears and decide what's good without any visual hints.
On the other hand, this effect would be much easier to understand if I could see what was happening.
I'm still confused as to why the boost and attenuation knob in the low end are shelf and their effect together.
So... just higher than the resonance boost there is a dip?

thee is no resonance control............why do you find it hard to accept that they are shelf EQs?
Most EQ's aprt from linear phase varieties introduce aome phase shift......the pultec uses different parts for the both the boost and cut so does actually introduce more phase shift when both cut and boost are applied. |

You can do similar things with the URS Console Strip Pro for those of us without access to a UAD card . Particularly with the 1951 EQ.
It is a very nice, useful and often subtle effect (often not too ), that doesn't only work with bass. If you find that your leads are lacking a certain something, or don't sit in the mix quite right no matter how you treat it, its well worth experimenting with this effect in the 3-5Khz area (Or whatever, just very often around this mark, because there is still a bit of EQ left over which can push it through, as well as the phase shift to alter the thing relative to the mix (normally strongest shift occurs around the cutoff, from what I understand - obviously depends on the model, and filter shape - I'm thinking more of notches - but as a rule of thumb))
In a non clinical EQ (which is where I spend more and more of my EQ time these days), this is exactly the sort of behaviour I am after.

I'm pretty sure I fully understand now.
By the way, I was just looking at the UAD stuff. I don't own a card, I'm trying to justify spending the money but I've got mortgage to pay! Looks like I'll be steaming up the shop window a bit longer.
Thanks for the replies everyone. |

I don't agree.
I've looked at Duende and Liquid Mix.
UAD has some of the best plug-ins ever made, more choice AND value.. for £500 I can get 5 free plugins and $900 worth of vouchers to choose more.
Liquid Mix runs more instances, which is the only benefit I could see (That and a cool desktop box) |
