Hi Peepz, does anyone here know of a book about the theory behind composing ? I don't mean a book about music theory 'pur sang', but something about how musical suspense is built, how to arrange, stuff like that...

Thanx mate ! I just read the title of the article and really liked the statement:

"Great songs are 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration" gnnn...

One of the projects i would like to do next is make a jazz bigband arrangement with just psychedelic sounds, not really psytrance, but some sort of twisted jazz from Zeta Reticuli (outer space), but i have no clue where to begin when it comes to classical techniques like 'counterpoint' and stuff like that. That's why i asked for books. I've been looking around a bit and found a few books myself:

The Technique of Orchestraton - Kent Kennan and Donald Grantham
Arranging book - Don Sebasky (with CD)
book Rimski-Korsokov
Jazz Arranging and Orchestration - Bill Russo
jazz arranging - Fred Sturm (with CD)

Nice to hear that you like my tracks and my ideas, i've been struggling for very long to strike a balance between the number of ideas in a track and the track being a unity and i have the feeling that i'm not nearly halfway there

do you have some of your on-line somewhere ?

Bye Bye,
-B

Hi Boobytrip

I am sure you know all about programming synths and arranging audio in a sequencer. What you're talking about is the organisation of pitches, more specifically in the context of jazz style melody and harmony. It's a vast subject and you might find yourself opening up a door to 10,000 new doors on many steps of the way. I wouldn't count on you completing this psychedelic synth jazz any time soon.

Don't worry though, it might take time but learning is really exciting.

I would suggest a few additions to your list:

The Study of Counterpoint (from Johann Joseph Fux's Gradus ad Parnassum) - Translated and edited by Alfred Mann

If you read and work through this book it will give you a very solid basis of polyphonic thinking/hearing in a tonal context. This can of course be applied to any musical context IMO.

Fundamentals of Musical Composition by Arnold Schoenberg
Theory of Harmony by Arnold Schoenberg

I'm a big fan of Schoenberg because he very skillfully presents and defends his opinions on music in general and harmony, counterpoint and composition in particular.

It's always a good idea to read about a topic many times, in many different sources. Add to these some books on jazz harmony and jazz arrangement and you should be good to go.

Hehehe... guess it's going to be one of those long term projects again eh ? I don't really mind, i just thought: damn i keep hearing about counterpoint and stuff like that, maybe i can try to understand what it is all about and it will help me make something different I always like to know a little bit of background about what i'm doing, whether it's production technique, or musical harmony. At least it will give me something to read while i'm on the train or on a bus. Anyhoo, thank you for the book titles. Are you a music student ?

""Great songs are 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration""

in fact, great songs are 50% inspiration and 50% luck when everything comes together and the impossible is possible .,

the problem is that you have to wait for 99 days to have one day like that

Boobytrip - im going to buy me some books aswell, on both mixing and arrangement...
i need something to read to feed my head with some knowledge... this goes in waves aswell... sometimes you get to a point where you urge for more knowledge and sometimes you just want to fiddle with the synths and sequencers

nope i got nothing online... when im a bit more happy about my work ill probably share it...

if im not happy i dont expect anyone else to be either
but i also do realize that ill never be completely happy... time will tell
