I posted this on deadact.com but figured I'd post it here too to see what people think:
personally, I think if a live act cant do a live performance, that is fine, but they should at least be djing their own tracks!
to me if someone dj's the tracks that they have made themselves it qualifies as an excuse to put "live" next to their name on the flyer. but if they have a pre-laid out set and they just pretend without beat-matching at all, that is bogus beyond all belief. what are they even doing there then?
what do you all think about this?

Spinning your own tracks != Live
Anyone that can put a live act together should know of ways they can manipulate their tracks during their performance. If they are faking it is probably because they are lazy.
We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love... and then we return home. |

dynamic looks like he's saluting hitler but hes really just gettin the crowd pumped up and bouncing.
@collision
I think there are many methods to making a good live set. I myself have just now gotten to the point of feeling like my set is "really" live. Pre-lined up tracks doesnt always mean bogus though that may just mean that they have lined up stripped down versions of their songs so they can jam live over top of them. I have seen certain dj's effect the sound with simple eq's and cdj effects that were more live than certain live sets. If its at the point where someone will doubt if you are playing live than you need to liven it up a bit thats the way i look at it. And no, djing their own tracks is an awful excuse to put live on the flyer and if that is the case they should also get paid less. SO dont let an artist tell you its live if its not because that makes you unintentionally lie on the flyer to all the party goers
and further confuse people on what a live set really means.
djing your own tracks and calling it live = Lazy rockstar looking to milk the scene for notoriety, and privelage.
sorry for the harsh tone i just think that issue in particular has no excuse its like its like a magician being booked at a theatre to perform his act for hundreds of people and then just showing up and playing a video of this awesome trick he invented in his bedroom.

What I find funny is that a large chunk of those "fakr" [sic] videos are of psytrance-related artists. Psytrance artists have got to be the biggest posers! |

or maybe psytrancers are the only ones who know what's going on so they can actually spot it

this dead act site, can it be submitted to anonymously - a la wikileaks?
Would you consider playing on a synth/midi controller for an international act billed as "LIVE!" - with nothing plugged in but the power, as being worthy of submission?

the warper events are cool. If youre really into the real-time thing, you should check em out:

moldover and shakey rock!
imo beatmatching is akin to data entry.
...except for the crazy dj who deliberately fluctuates bpms during a 2 channel mix, creating a drift in and out of "the pocket".
