Being "couloured" and living in the USA I would expect one to glance at my exterior and label me as black, partially because my lineage isn't from here but why do you refer to Africans as blacks? Shouldn't they just be Africans or take on the name of what ever country that one resides in Africa?

Do you also believe in identifying yourself with where you are from or where you live?

I ask this to better understand my fellow trancers that dance to the rythyms of unity in distant lands. Maybe someday I can experience meeting more worldly celestial bodies but for now I am limited to the lower 48

nah dude...

its where your heart is...and for me where i was born....my homeland!

I am a South African.....yet an African too...as well as an Earthling!

My true blood is Scottish however!

I am a Pinkie!
....but i hear ya!

We all generalize that Black people are from African...hence Africans....but its a broad term.

We have non South African black people here....and you can see the one is a Nigerian ...ones from Somalia....etc.

Same as our local black folk!

U can see who is a Zulu....Zhosa...Khoi....etc.

But yeah......tehy all black.

Like Brittish folk....Swedish folk.....and Americans.....they white.....caucasion....whatever!

But sure....they brittish too.....or Swedish.

Its a thing from the past i thinks.

the folk her in SA were Afrikaans.....and they spoke about SWARTES....and thats Blacks in English....but the Brittish refered to them as Africans!

just teh way it turned out i suppose!

they said something on TV that made LANK sense the other day (YEAH....Forreal!!)

i was wanting to say the same thing just did not know how really..

We should not look at ourselves from teh inside out.

eg. I am Sarasin.....white.....CapeTonian....South African.....African.....Earthling.

We should look at it like this!!!

eg. I am Sarasin, I am an Earthling.....an African....South African to be Specific....living in Cape Town.....and i am white.

we wil have SO much more in common with our fellow man in this way.

no, really. they see it as a derogatory term. one has to refer to black people as africans, even though it seems a little generalised. had a huge discussion about this whole thing with no real outcome. just the rules the wced imply...

This discussion is so huge, it would take forever to come to some sort of solution!

I'm coloured and live in Cape Town and I'm proud of it!

There is so much history that you can't forget about..... to label everybody African...... that's questionable on many levels...

why do you refer to Africans as blacks?

Generally and relatively its a polite, if not old skool, term for black South Africans. But there are a few other nasty racist derogatory ones still lingering around ...

South Africa is not just black and white. There are people of all hues, lots of Indians, Chinese, Portuguese, the Cape Spanish you name it, generally its a big melting pot.

Oh, lest we forget, the real African people were of course the Bushmen, or the San or Khoi San. But they got largely obliterated by all the settlers (white and black).

Ever wondered where the name 'Africa' comes from? Well, the Romans gave it to one of their colonies in the north of the continent, and the name stuck.
