OK, we've pretty much established that advance *free* downloading is a bad thing... hurts the label, the artist, and the listener's chance of getting a released album. What do people think about the Bitpass system of downloading?
www.bitpass.com
I was thinking something like this could feature on label's sites; a whole album in 128k quality would cost $2.00-$2.50 to download, and the money could be put toward a CD/vinyl release. That way people get what they like to hear... at 25c a download, it would cost pocket change to reveal a bad album Alternatively, artists with Web space could put their music online and collect the money themselves... after paying for server space it wouldn't be much, but it beats being unsigned/signed to a crummy label and getting no payment at all.
Elysium, others? Would you go for this?

bird got to fly,
man got to sit and wonder why, why, why?
tiger got to sleep,
bird got to land,
man got to tell himself he understand. |
