Biokinetix - I3D1 (Morphonic Records, Morning Star, Geomagnetic.tv) 2010 (MPH109CD, GEOCD049)

Biokinetix is from the French Underground trance Resistance. Fabry, as his birth name is, was born in France at the year 1977 and was a rocket from a young age in a varied musical world with styles like Rock, Soul, R’n’B, Electro, Reggae and Trance. His first experience as a DJ about 10 years ago was on vinyl in London where he would be mixing NuNRG and Hard-trance. After 4 years of partying with the Brits, he decided to come back to France and started DJing on the French stage. In 2006 he joined ETC promoter's team Residante (epidemictrancecorp.com) and started to share the stage with bigger names like Bizzare Contact, Time-Lock, Ananda Shake, Hyper Frequencies etc. In the end of 2007 he felt inspired to create his own tracks under the project name “Biokinetix”, and in less than a year later he finally presented his first self produced music at the “regular” Morphonic Records parties. 2008 would be the year of his first release, and it would be on Geomagnetic.TV (USA) with the track “Crystal Activity”. In the beginning of 2009, Fabry signed with Morphonic Records (a Japanese & French label) and released a digital EP named “i2D1”. After that the Biokinetix sound started to propagate on the dance-floors worldwide which included live performances in Europe at varies parties ... in 2010 he started the year with the release of his debut album “I3D1”, which you are now ready to read about. He would venture on by releasing varies single tracks for compilations on labels such as Mind Control Records, Goa Records, Hadra Records and Digital Drugs Coalition Records.

In the summer of 2010 Biokinetix continued his world tour and workings on more releases and projects like the Biorizer project (Biokinetix vs Mesmerizer). The story continues with his newest release, Biokinetix & Friends - Remixes Album I3D3 which came out in October of 2010 on Geomagnetic.TV, and his 2nd full length album “21st century” released in November 2010 on Morphonic Records. Also a release to watch out for is the compilation album, Magnetik Attraction which is compiled by Biokinetix & Minstorm (Dr. Spook, head of Geomagnetic.TV).

1 ***** I love the chachachachacha ( … ) echoing effect; it really sends this album into a lunar filled exploration with jet engine made by sunshine. Has an amazing lift with a machine driven force. Oh yes! With some minor melodies trying to take over but always gets pulled back in only to give way to awesome Full-On effects.

2 **** Starts like a slow stomper with a notion to rise. When the kick and base starts to run a lot of cute synths come to play like space guns in many varieties. It’s like a chase and someone’s shooting in us in high def space cartoon. Harmonies breaks the track to bring floating silence only to bring back the stomp with aggressive pads by its side which introduces a massive take-off. Ok space-sheep’s, prepare to hurtle through the galaxy! *You got to be fucking kidding...

3 **1/2 Female voice breaths her lungs of voice out to the stratosphere. Tempo starts unrushed and continues to gain power as a side melody supports. Shooting be-be-guns from outer space in the distance closing in to fill the screen. Beautiful voice returns to empower the tune with a take-off, ready set lets go1 Not so good, to puny. Melody I a drag as well, especially in this track thinking that it’s a replica of most other melodies in here.

4 ** Heavy steps closing in, an experience. More a rugged bass line now with echoing bleeps like from a submarine. Builds as previous tracks gathering enough energy to fly you away to which ever comical galaxy it might lead. Some scratching floats around while whining up lifts levitates to a quit pleasant and harmonic melody with echoing choruses. A female speaks about coming harder and the track does just so. A guitar. Cool enough but enough with those cartoonish laser guns that just smells childish.

5 ***1/2 Some pretty heavy but not seriously heavy guitar riffs which becomes infested with more laser guns with mediocre sizes. The run and its variation are cool enough and there is lifts that moves your face. Beautiful break, really nice! Top points just because of this. Emotional and inducing. Then back to become unserious and fun filled with a ‘you have reached the wrong number sounds with a ‘Hallo’. Overall it’s funny and nice enough.

6 ***1/2 Has a fast phased hyper run with the Hyper Hyper sample from The Prodigy. More laser guns … Squeaking more this time which isn’t that bad. Track as most here fly in great maneuvers, which are for sure. Come on light this mother fucker up. Lots of humor in space on this album. Never taking itself serious just having fun and making sure the fun is presented in hyper moods.

7 **1/2 Pornodelicious. The hornyfied woman makes her pleasure heard and felt. Bass line is more serious now and the tempo more fitted for an older audience. The effects fly with comfort by the tracks side while the hi-hats gather up some tempo and the riches get thicker. The be-be-laser space guns are more subtle now (at least in the first half of the track) spearing us for the childish with some attempts to create lift up’s and breaks that becomes sprinkles of star dust while the bass picks itself up to fly further down the cosmos. Unfortunately the track looses itself towards the end and becomes terribly annoying. Scratching comes as the voice sais ‘fuck bitch’, A juvenile release with a lot of up’s but too many downs.

8 *** Some more seriousness in the intro, creepy, heavy and interesting. Beats flinger around, bass scrapes the surface and introduces the Full-On kick. Breaks down to let a sample have its space to unfold and build tension before the run is on and the same story as the rest unfolds. It becomes boring too fast. Kudos for the cool experimentation of the bass’, too bad it loses itself after each respectable attempt in creating something unique according to the overall album. Nice energy in this one at some spots.

9 ***1/2 Begins with a very beautiful chorus which is creating some awe in the mood with the follow up of a lift that rushes the track into its same path. The sample ‘You got to be fucking kidding returns yet again (same sample in two different tracks, really??). It’s cool for sure, but not twice so cool. Oh, my bad. It’s a remix of the second track. Which is best? The original …

10 ***** Last track takes a totally different approach with some instruments of the real world followed by a more progressive beat making this become a near downbeated track. It sounds good and has nice elements in it like the heavy pads with harmonies floating nicely with the company of well fitted effects. After this albums intense space journey this is a nice relief and creates some smiles with children laughing and beats gathering. A flutist plays their hymn and a sturdy bass creates a walk of strong and confident rituals while circling around a bon fire. Nice work and a worthy finisher.

Recommendation: I can’t say that I am overly excited about this release, but it has it’s wonderbar moments like the first track and some parts of the tracks scattered around on the album. At most times it becomes generic and lost by its own hyper chase for space rockets and laser guns that at most times sounds like puny be-be-guns in outer space. For DJ’s there are moments here that will drive the crowd absolutely nuts when played at the right moments and for sure there is value in the overall package. Too bad most tracks get ruined by annoying usage of space effects, lifts and full power killer energy. When it’s good, it’s fucking awesome! When it’s bad it’s bad enough to turn the volume off. The last track which is by another artist remixed by biokinetix is very nice and offers much more variation of instruments and vibe while the rest rests on a specific formula, with the exceptions of some parts here and there. The artwork is smashing, really nice and fresh and do represent the music inside perfectly. All in all, check out some samples and get it if it makes you feel good.

Total Score: 3.15 / 5

Favorite tracks: 1(!), 2, 9(!) + a special mention to the breakdown in the 5th track, which is beautiful.
