After the topic "Live? Let's be realists! Where is the real problem?" I started to think how could be the management of an error during a liveact or a dj act. I mean a big error, not beatmatching errors.

Please classify the erros in (Problem, What Happen, Cause, Solution, and people reaction)

The biggest problem I had during a gig was:

Problem:
During a liveset with Ableton I have selected an empty scene row

What happen:
Music stopped for a while (about 3-5 seconds)

Cause:
too much beer and talking on stage

Solution:
smile and started with the next scene row.

People reaction:
People just screamed, after a while everybody forgot about that

Well, I had a bigger problem than that, during a small party my Hercules Dj Console broke but since there was nobody dancing & so I continued with a previously recorder dj set..           --

Problem:
during a yabyum liveact (full dancefloor) the whole computer froze up (complete crash)

What happen:
total silence... and very freaked out partypeople... the liveact was really psychedelic at this point & the silence shocked everyone

Cause:
a young lady that had to much... er, drink.. kept coming up to the dj booth & telling us how great we sounded... again & again every 30 seconds (goldfish syndrome )... finally she stumbled & leaned on the firewire cable connecting the laptop to the soundcard...

Solution:
gaspard (other half of yabyum) started djing while i rebooted the laptop... then he pushed stop on the cdj & i pushed start on the laptop simultaneously...

People reaction:
shock at the silence... bad vibes towards the girl (nothing too heavy)... relief & screaming cheers when the sound started again...

Moral: beware of over enthusiastic wellwishers... make sure your laptop & leads are protected from drinks/pushing/tripping etc.

love & light,

Problem:During a live act on a party here in mexico last november we tryed to place a extra track on the ableton while the live act was playing

What happend:
The track started to play 2 times with a 30 sec diference and started to sound really awfull

Cause:
Some friends started to tell me to play a track they really like but i tell them that it wasnt in the secuence on the original live and i was very drunk and smoked so i said OK there u gooo

Solution:
After 30 seconds of layered songs i decided to stop and start the track from the begining

People Reaction:
I dont know hahaha it was to dark and i was to drunk to knew what the hell people was saying the only one to tell me something was my friends and my brother they sayed i was a moron all night long

Moral:
Never try to place a extra track on ableton live while u are drunk, very high and the live playing along

The end

If u are Something, Dont ask for nothing
If u are Nothing, Dont ask for something

great question. i was just about to ask this as we are about to perform our first live gig in about a month. what happens if u have stuck notes or big crashes? is there a way to have a contigency plan?/ what are some options? Should we be careful about activating too many plugsins, etc? id love to hear from people who play live shows out regularly.

I was thinking about and I guess having a mixed version of the liveset would be a good way to stay safe.

If the crash is big (that you really can't continue the act) you can always play the mix (or mix your songs if you r dj too)..           --

If you are doing a live set, then chances are you've pre-arranged the live set in Ableton or whatever...

Have the same live set already burned to CD. Keep the CD playing during the live set with the volume turned down. If even the worst-case, total disaster dead computer fuckup scenario occurs, you can just turn up the volume and lose 2 seconds of sound. No biggie.

Having the occasional glitch in a live set is fine, and almost expected, but once it happens more than once or twice the effect on the dancer is apparent - one or two glitches is almost funny, but once the dancer becomes afraid to emotionally invest themselves in the groove, the psychedelic vibe is over. Repeated fuck ups destroy the dance floor and send everone wandering off to the chill area or whatever.           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604
